Nokia introduces the Nokia D500 Multiservice Access Platform to Europe

At CeBIT in Hannover, Germany, Nokia today introduced Europe to the Nokia D500 Multiservice Access Platform, an access solution that will help operators evolve their broadband services market from the current, single service fast internet access to full service voice, video and data access.

The Nokia D500 first introduced at SuperNet 2002 in California in January is targeted at incumbent PTTs who are looking to transition their service portfolio from the present single service Fast Internet Access model to a broader multi-service model that enables increased average revenue per user (ARPU) and greater network operating efficiencies.

The Nokia D500 has also already begun to make advances in the Asian ETSI markets, particularly in China. As announced last week, in the Chinese media, the Nokia D500 has received the official Network Approval License from the Ministry of Information and Industry (MII). This means the Nokia D500 is the first foreign New Generation Multi-service Access Platform to be approved for deployment in China.

The Nokia D500 supports Nokia's vision of both a service and technology evolution that will take broadband networks to an ALL-IP full service environment that will enable operators to create a more dynamic service environment where voice, data and video services over IP will enable greater service revenues per user and finally provide truly personalized and personalisable end user services. In parallel the D500 will also support operator network transition from the current ATM based networks, through an ATM/IP hybrid stage to an ALL-IP network based future.

The Nokia D500 enables this technology and service evolution by first and foremost putting in place today a future-proof platform. This begins initially with a high density, high capacity ATM-solution to fit into today's ATM-based broadband networks and offers ADSL and SHDSL services such as Fast Internet Access, VoDSL and LAN-IC. The D500 broadband access platform is then able to morph into a hybrid ATM/IP platform and then onto an IP-based broadband access platform.

As broadband media services begin to take off in earnest, the Nokia D500 offers IP Multicasting and support for IPMG protocols that allow the delivery of differentiated high-bandwidth services over VDSL such as Video on Demand, Broadcast Digital TV and Interactive TV.

Following the broadband media stage, the Nokia D500 will support the introduction of voice through the addition of a POTS voice card thus enabling operators to flexibly deliver Voice Over solutions, such as voice over DSL and ATM, plus Voice over Packet, thus reducing the operator's dependence on switching systems with narrowband characteristics as are commonly in operation today that potentially limit the delivery of high-bandwidth integrated voice, video and data services such as desktop video conferencing and video telephony.

The Nokia D500 is specifically designed to allow operators, many of whom are at different stages of their business, service and network evolutions today, to plan the evolution of their access networks in line with their particular service and business needs and the best use of their existing 'legacy' networks and technologies, avoiding, for example, forklift upgrades.

The Nokia D500 Multi-service Access Platform supports all operators in their drive to increase revenues through the introduction of new services, to optimize the costs of operating their networks through the introduction of new cost-efficient technologies and plan the capital expenditure to match service and subscriber growth. Nokia's D500 is the access solution for all operators!
