Nokia brings 'five nines' to the edge at CeBit 2002

At CeBIT in Hannover, Germany, Nokia announced today the availability of the Nokia ASR 2020 leased-line IP edge router for global ETSI service-provider markets. Initially targeted at the European and Asian IP aggregation business, the Nokia ASR 2020 will be available for trials at the end of 2Q/2002 in ETSI markets.

The Nokia ASR 2020 can aggregate huge volumes of multiservice traffic in an extremely compact size, while also bringing true industry-leading 'five-nines' (99.999%) service availability to IP service networks.

The Nokia ASR 2020 has been developed right from the start with carrier-class fault tolerance as a pivotal feature and the Nokia AmbOS operating system is the first router operating system to deliver full route-state redundancy for Internet routing protocols including BGP, IS-IS, and OSPF, as well as MPLS signaling protocols.

"As operators in Europe and Asia look to evolve their networks towards ALL-IP, service availability and reliability are becoming ever more important. The edge of current networks, between the core and the access, have been identified as a possible critical point of failure for service delivery. Nokia ASR 2020 helps operators bring the high levels of resiliency and availability that are required in future IP-based services." States Mr. Mark Slater, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Broadband Systems, Nokia.

Designed with an ultracompact chassis, the ASR 2020 is only three rack units high and mounts in a standard rack. This pioneering design is optimized for the most space-constrained environments. It yields support for 16 STM1s in a single ASR 2020 chassis, or 224 in a single standard rack.

The Nokia ASR 2020 provides the scalability benchmark for the industry. It provides world-class densities with more than 480,000 PVCs in a standard seven-foot telco rack. With its unique support for 5 priority queues per logical port, the Nokia ASR 2020 allows operators and service providers to offer truly differentiated IP services.
