Nokia Chosen to Secure Japan's Leading Research & Development Network

Tokyo, May 24, 2002 - Okazaki National Research Institutes (ONRI), Japan's leading university research organisation, has chosen Nokia solution to ensure secure communications between its member bodies, individuals, universities and other private organisations.

ONRI was established in 1981 to promote close co-operation between researchers from national and private universities, as well as other institutions throughout Japan. ONRI is comprised of three main research institutes: the Institute for Molecular Science (IMS), the National Institute for Basic Biology (NIBB), and the National Institute for Physiological Sciences (NIPS). Utilizing the specializations of these three research institutes, the Center for Integrative Bioscience was jointly established in 2000 to create an institution with unique research capabilities.

Due to the sensitive nature of information traversing through its recently upgraded Gigabit Ethernet infrastructure, ONRI required a high performance, gigabit-class security appliance to match the requirements of its broadband network. In addition, ONRI wanted a solution that was easily deployable, scalable and with a strong price-performance ratio. Based on this criteria, ONRI chose the Nokia IP Security appliances as the platform-of-choice and deployed the Nokia IP 740 which tightly integrates Check Point Software Technologies' VPN-1®/FireWall-1® software and has throughput speeds in excess of 1 gigabit per second.

Hitoshi Oono, Research Associate of ONRI's Center of Information and Communication, Network Management Office, explained: "As our network security needs increased, OS and patch updates required us to spend considerable time and money. Further, with the migration to broadband, there was performance deterioration in our existing firewalls. The higher traffic volume and speed clearly required a better security solution".

ONRI also chose to use the Nokia Horizon Manager, Nokia's management tool, which is designed to dramatically reduce the time and costs associated with deploying, upgrading, tracking and maintaining software in networked environments.

"We decided on Nokia security solutions for various reasons, key ones being the ease of deployment, operation, maintenance, as well as the impressive throughput speeds. With Nokia, security implementation and management is now a simple exercise," Oono added.

Mikio Yanashita, Country Manager, Nokia Internet Communications Japan, said, "It is an honor that ONRI chose Nokia's security solutions and we are dedicated to meeting their evolving network security requirements. Nokia is committed to delivering the highest standards in security and performance to match our customers' needs in Japan."

Beyond its gigabit firewalling capabilities, the IP740 is designed for maximum network uptime with its hot swappable components and redundant power supply option. It includes four integrated Ethernet interfaces, two type II PCMCIA slots offering support for modems and four CPCI slots for gigabit Ethernet, and a flexible range of local and wide-area network interfaces. The Nokia IP 740 is pre-configured and tested for rapid deployment, offers full IP routing with a comprehensive suite of IP routing protocols, and is backed by Nokia's world class "First Call - Final Resolution" 24x7 Follow-the-Sun global service and support.
