Medical Solutions Plc: Guys and St. Thomas' Hospitals use Spirigel

LEEDS, U.K., June 5, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Medical Solutions (LSE:MLS), the specialist healthcare company, announces that its subsidiary Adams Healthcare has added Guys and St. Thomas NHS Trust to the increasing list of accounts purchasing Spirigel(r), anti-infection hand cleanser.

The alcoholic gel is specially designed to disinfect socially clean hands without the use of water. A recent report in the Journal of Hospital Infection, following clinical trials by the Infection Control team at Lewisham Hospital, showed how effective the product was in helping to combat hospital acquired infections (HAI) and MRSA. The annualized savings were estimated to be over 200,000 pounds per annum, following the reduced level of hospital acquired infections through use of Spirigel(r) hand gel.

The product has been implemented Trust wide and has been chosen as one of the front line defenses in the fight against hospital acquired infections.

Adams has now completed a full installation program. This included site surveys and bracket fitting in each ward, and also involves a continuing commitment to provide ongoing educational support to nursing staff, in conjunction with the hospital infection control team.

David Tucker senior Infection Control Nurse Guys and St Thomas commented: "Improving hand hygiene throughout the Trust is seen as a vital step in reducing incidences of hospital acquired infection. Spirigel has been strategically placed in every ward and department in order to achieve maximum compliance. The product will be used prior to patient contact by staff and will complement our existing hand-washing systems."

Dr. R. H. Adams, Chief Operating Officer, Adams Healthcare said: "Spirigel is a proven product - it reduces hospital acquired infections and saves the NHS a significant amount of money when used. The recent National Audit Office report on the increasing incidence of HAI in the NHS, and the letter from the Chief Medical Officer to Chief Executives of hospitals to improve infection control standards highlight that this is a national issue and Guys and St Thomas NHS Trust is at the fore front of this initiative. Our ideal would be to get Spirigel(r) attached to the end of every hospital bed in the U.K."

Note:

Spirigel is now a stock item available through the NHS Logistics supply chain. This allows the product to be delivered at ward level throughout the U.K.
