BPI-Consult GmbH, which is part of the Jaakko Pöyry Group's Infrastructure & Environment business group, has been awarded a general design contract for the 30 km section of the "Metrorapid" railway line between Dusseldorf and Dortmund in Germany. BPI-Consult will carry out the project in a 50/50 consortium with ZKP Engineers, Germany. The total contract value amounts to EUR 6.2 million, of which BPI-Consult's share is EUR 3.1 million.
The Metrorapid concept is based on the world's most advanced track bound transportation technology allowing a maximum speed of more than 500 km/h. Initially a 79 km magnetically levitated train (maglev) line will be built between Dusseldorf and Dortmund. Running at 10 minutes' intervals, the trains will be able to carry almost 30 million passengers annually. The overall travel time will be 37 minutes. The total investment for this line amounts to EUR 3.2 billion and there are plans to extend the railway line another 50 km to Cologne at a later stage.
The Infrastructure & Environment business group, operating under the brand name Jaakko Pöyry Infra, had net sales of EUR 108 million in 2001. Jaakko Pöyry Infra has offices in 12 countries and employs some 1200 experts worldwide.
