BAE SYSTEMS Sees ROI With Telelogic's Automated Document Generation Tool in Less Than One Year

Telelogic DocExpress Streamlines Reporting Enabling Teams to Focus on Development and Not Manual Tasks

MALMO, Sweden, October 14, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Telelogic (Stockholm:TLOG) (Other OTC:TGIAF), the leading global provider of solutions for advanced systems and software development, today announced that BAE SYSTEMS' use of Telelogic DocExpress(R) to automate document generation provided a return on investment more than equal to its cost within the first year.

"It saves so much time. By not having to use manual processes to generate our documents, DocExpress/Word paid for itself in the first year," said Mary Schweizer, senior engineering specialist.

A team of 200 engineers -- working on a mapping software project in BAE SYSTEMS Mission Solutions business unit, needed to generate and maintain some two dozen internal reports. These reports are based on project information in DOORS(R), Telelogic's enterprise requirements management solution. Each report was up to 70 pages long and often took weeks of manual work to create. About 25 percent of each report comprised information they needed to generate from DOORS.

"Whenever our team needed to generate a report, we would go into DOORS, copy the information paragraph by paragraph, and paste into our document," she explained. "It was a completely manual process and there were often major changes."

Tracking those changes in the reports was difficult -- without automation, obsolete requirements could sometimes be overlooked. Achieving the consistent, professional formatting and layout they wanted was just as challenging. Automating the production of documents with DocExpress had additional benefits.

"By generating these reports automatically, we no longer have to worry about consistency," Schweizer explained. "When a requirement changes, we know that the change will be captured and the requirement will be updated in the report."

BAE SYSTEMS Mission Solutions, based in San Diego, takes process very seriously, as indicated by their recent achievement of the SEI Level 4 CMM rating. This rating, achieved by only six percent of software companies nationwide, indicates Mission Solutions' use of best practices and the overall maturity and consistency of its software development processes. Mission Solutions is now implementing new processes to achieve the highest possible rating, Level 5. Traceability throughout the product development lifecycle is a key aspect of this rating. Once they implemented DocExpress, it was a matter of creating Word templates for their documents.

"Best of all, it's automated," Schweizer said. "Where it used to take weeks of painstaking work, we now have the documents updated at the click of a mouse."

Scott Raskin, president of Telelogic Americas and Asia/Pacific, said, "Our vision is to make software and systems development more efficient and profitable by providing robust tools that automate much of the routine, manual processes that cause so much trouble. BAE SYSTEMS' experience with DocExpress is a perfect example of how automation of mundane, but important, tasks can free resources for more critical and rewarding jobs."
