Nokia Expands Internet Traffic Management Offerings and Lowers Cost of Entry with High-Performance Solutions

Mountain View, California  (October 30, 2002) Today, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced its new lineup of Nokia BIG-IP 1000, 2400, 5100 and 5110 application switches. With introduction of these four new platforms, Nokia has broadened its Internet Traffic Management product offerings, lowered the cost of entry for new customers and enhanced the performance of its platform offerings to bring increased availability and scalability to applications. Nokia also introduced its BIG-IP Link Controller 1000, a high-availability solution that enables multiple Internet connections for always-on connectivity.  The Link Controller works transparently and does not require modification to VPN or security policy. The Link Controller 1000 speeds connectivity and saves cost, directing users over the quickest or least expensive links.  This extension of Nokia’s current line of ITM products allow Nokia to meet single-site, multi-site and multi-homing traffic management needs of enterprises, service providers and e-businesses at all levels.

The addition of the BIG-IP 1000, 2400, 5100 and 5110 application switches, along with the BIG-IP Link Controller 1000, expand Nokia’s current ITM product line through its alliance with F5 Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: FFIV), the leading provider of Application Traffic Management solutions. Each platform features the latest 4.5 software release, enabling it to address all of a customer’s IP traffic, including mobile applications, as well as inspect, intercept, transform and direct any type of IP payload. With the introduction of the latest 4.5 software release, an exciting new feature that enables traffic mirroring on all ports becomes available. This highly leverageable feature enables a BIG-IP application switch to scale multiple IDS sensors, enhancing overall high-speed network security. The 4.5 software release is fully compatible with current platforms and will be available for download to Nokia customers with maintenance support agreements.

“With the introduction of four new Nokia BIG-IP traffic management platforms and the Nokia Link Controller 1000, Nokia’s value proposition is significantly enhanced, allowing us to offer a ‘one-stop shop’ of well-integrated, secure traffic management solutions at a compelling price, “ said Scott Blaine, General Manager of the F5/Nokia relationship, Nokia Internet Communications. “With solutions to address virtually every type of traffic requirement, Nokia’s broad ITM product family offers customers a variety of secure, flexible and easy to manage options for optimizing the performance of business critical applications.”

Offering an industry-leading price/performance ratio is the BIG-IP 1000, an eight-Ethernet port device addressing the basic traffic management needs of enterprises and service providers by enabling customers to switch Layer 4 and Layer 7 traffic based on flexible business rules. The BIG-IP 2400, powered by the a new ASIC, provides increased Layer 4 performance while simultaneously optimizing Layer 7 traffic – the first with this capability in the Nokia ITM product family. Dedicated to the demanding requirements of mobile applications and Web services is the BIG-IP 5100, the industry’s fastest Layer 7 processor, allowing deep packet inspection of both HTTP and TCP traffic. The BIG-IP 5110 holds equal processing power, and also extends Nokia’s presence into the copper gigabit market.

Organizations trying to contain costs while optimizing existing infrastructure are leveraging the Internet to deliver corporate applications. To heighten availability, enterprises often employ multiple links to the public network, but costly Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) router solutions are difficult to implement, making the management of these multiple links overly complex. The Nokia BIG-IP Link Controller 1000 alleviates these issues by managing and optimizing inbound/outbound traffic performance, increasing scalability and throughput in addition to maximizing return-on-investment for corporate connectivity. The solution provides comprehensive ISP and route selection while eliminating all deployment barriers and excessive costs associated with multi-homing via a BGP router solution. This capability extends Nokia’s ITM solution reach beyond single-site and multi-site traffic management to route optimization and high availability, also known as multi-homing traffic management  – all in a low cost, entry-level traffic management platform.

“As the leading provider of application traffic management products for enterprises, we realize how critical it is to provide integrated solutions that secure corporate data and maximize application performance,” said Tom Pettigrew, vice president of channel and OEM sales. “These new traffic management advancements continue to build on the synergies inherent in the Nokia/F5 relationship, bringing customers an unmatched competency in both protecting and optimizing enterprise, web services and mobile applications.”

The Nokia BIG-IP traffic management platforms will feature enhanced ease of use and management through integration with the Nokia Horizon Manager (NHM). Purpose-built for secure rapid deployment of Nokia solutions, the NHM interfaces with Nokia BIG-IP and provides centralized systems management to securely install, upgrade and maintain the system while dramatically reducing the total cost of ownership. With introduction of these new products, Nokia has further strengthened its position as a single source for secure, reliable and manageable network security solutions for its customers.

Current products in the Nokia ITM product line include the Nokia BIG-IP FireGuard 520 appliance, Nokia BIG-IP HA+ 540 appliance, the Nokia BIG-IP 2000 and 5000 application switch and the Nokia 3-DNS Controller 520.

The Nokia BIG-IP 1000, 2400, 5100 and 5110, as well as the Nokia BIG-IP Link Controller 1000, will be available in the Americas, Europe and Japan in December of this year, and in the Asia-Pacific region during Q1, 2003. The Nokia BIG-IP software version 4.5 will be available globally in December of this year. The Nokia Horizon Manager for ITM solutions will be available in January, 2003.
