Introduction of the Nokia Security Service Manager Marks Crucial Milestone in Provisioning of Secure Connections in a Mobile World

Today, Nokia is introducing Nokia Security Service Manager (NSSM) to address the needs of secure over-the-air provisioning of security applications to Symbian Operating System-based mobile handsets. With this product, Nokia enables enterprises to mobilize business-critical applications and services whilst maintaining security. NSSM will be used for the lifecycle management of mobile handset security, including deployment of security applications such as Mobile VPN Clients and providing them with automatic configuration updates. NSSM is a vendor and application independent, self-sufficient security provisioning and management system. By adhering to open architecture, Nokia enables the creation of new mobile services for mobile subscribers. NSSM will continue to address the specific needs of mobile security and provide third party vendors with open interfaces to use its services.

Commenting on the announcement of the Nokia Secure Service Manager, Dan MacDonald, vice president of product management and marketing, Nokia Internet Communications said, “
Security has become an enabling technology for enterprises and through this announcement we are extending enterprise security to the mobile world. Nokia Security Service Manager enables the mobile workforce to use business applications seamlessly and securely.”

The requirements for security applications on mobile handsets and their management are specific and complex. NSSM provides an easy-to-manage, scalable, and cost-effective mobile Virtual Private Network (VPN) deployment solution that enterprises, service providers, and mobile operators can use to extend their VPN solutions to the mobile domain.  Nokia emphasises that VPNs allow companies to communicate with their branch offices, customers, partners, employees, and suppliers securely, using both wired and wireless infrastructure. Through VPNs, the Internet has become a means of providing more cost-effective access to business critical information from virtually anywhere.  NSSM is a robust, over-the-air provisioning system that can securely deliver handset software and configurations as well as secure, automatic updates to mobile handsets whilst demonstrably reducing IT administration costs.

The standards based PKI functionality in NSSM can be utilized by various applications to enhance their security and usability on mobile handsets.  NSSM has powerful PKI services that provide enterprises an easy migration path from legacy authentication to certificate-based authentication for Mobile VPN users, for example. NSSM includes a Certification Authority (CA) service and can act as a Registration Authority (RA) towards external CAs, providing an automatic certificate enrollment process for mobile users.

Fujitsu Invia has been evaluating the VPN client solution for Nokia. "Enterprises are increasingly deploying business-grade mobile handsets for their mobile workforce. To address some of the challenges as a global integrator and service provider, Fujitsu will use NSSM to provide a broad scale of mobile security services to help our enterprise customers," says sales director Antti Kytömäki of Fujitsu Invia.

The Nokia Security Service Manager will be available through selected system integrators and resellers. Initial delivery will be during Q1 2003.
