What: A Philadelphia Thanksgiving Weekend Tradition Continues!
Celebrating the grand opening of the ninth season of the Blue
Cross RiverRink, the management is pleased to support Variety
Club of Delaware Valley in many ways. One dollar of every
admission ticket from November 29 through December 1 will be
donated to Variety Club.
From 10 to 10:30 a.m., children with disabilities will
demonstrate the fun of sled hockey on this Olympic-size ice
skating rink led by Mike Doyle, who is considered the "Pied
Piper" of sled hockey.
From 10:30 to 11:30, Variety Club kids will learn how to use
sled skates and, continuing this program that was launched in
2001, it can be practically guaranteed these children will be
grinning from ear to ear! Developed in Scandinavia, skaters
sit on specially designed sleds with regulation skate blades
and use two hockey sticks to propel themselves along the ice.
It is a wonderful sense of reward for children who never
expected to perform athletic skills.
At Noon, Rinky, the official mascot of the Blue Cross
RiverRink will help cut the ribbon as hundreds of local
children rush into the ice to inaugurate the ninth season of
the Blue Cross RiverRink.
Background: The Blue Cross RiverRink is the only public skating
facility in the region to offer sled skating sessions for the
physically challenged. Special sled skating sessions will be
available on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30
a.m. on December 14th and throughout the months of January
and February through Saturday, March 8, 2003.
Through the generosity of Pennoni Associates, Penn's Landing
Corporation will have four sleds and sets of protective
equipment available for public use. The Blue Cross RiverRink
staff has been specifically trained to assist guests with the
sled skates. Both novice and experienced sled skaters will
be able to skate at the Blue Cross RiverRink during the
sessions. "We want every child to experience the fun and
excitement of ice skating at the Blue Cross RiverRink,"
shared Mr. Dominic Sabatini, President of Penn's Landing
With over 100,000 guests expected to enjoy the Blue Cross RiverRink on Penn's Landing at Festival Pier in the 2001-2002 season, this year's opening weekend will benefit the Delaware Valley Chapter of Variety Club, the charity that supports children with disabilities.
