Reflecting on the Wonder Years and Life Friends -- New Book Reaches Back to Yesterday's Moments of Hope and Love

SEATTLE, Wash., Dec. 4, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- A simple pat on the back, a gesture of kindness or just hanging around with friends are some of the things that remind us of forgotten lessons in our past. Sometimes it helps to take a trip down memory lane and get reacquainted with what we left behind. Hal Kelly's "Asleep, To Dream In Seattle: Coming of Age in a Cultural Dustbin" (now available from 1stbooks Library) takes his readers back to those special moments that shaped their future.

Remember the difficult times when we thought we couldn't endure life's unfairness? Almost always, there was a special person -- a friend, a lover, a teacher or a parent -- who helped us meet those challenges and enabled us to survive. "Asleep, To Dream In Seattle" is a simple yet meaningful and humorous book inspired from Kelly's recollections about his high school years and the important people who helped him toward maturity.

The complexities of life have certainly blinded us to basic things that we kept hidden in the treasures of our hearts. "Asleep, To Dream In Seattle" allows the readers to rediscover the times when we thought we were so burdened, only to find solace in the company and guidance of a special person. Through "Asleep, To Dream In Seattle," Kelly reminds us to recognize those special people who helped us to survive and to find our purpose.

Hal Kelly was a troubled kid back in a Seattle high school. After a chaotic first semester, he had to be rehabilitated at Gonzaga High in Spokane for nearly two years. All those troubles gradually changed after he returned to Seattle's Queen Anne High and graduated in 1950. He holds master's degrees in education, Russian studies and counseling. With a post-masters specialist diploma, he is a certified psychologist. Interest in personal change phenomena led to his study on the effect of helping, on both the helper and the person being helped; the dissertation he wrote on that subject influenced this book. He completed his doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh in 1973.
