Playgrounds in a Country at War -- Novel Tells of Being a Young Boy on the Homefront During World War II

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J., Dec. 5, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Author Richard A. Pender was only a boy during the Great Depression and the advent of World War II. Although he was too young to fight, he recalls an interesting adventure from that time in American history, when families had to move to jobs built by the war economy and kids had to stay the way they are, always improvising ways to live and play as if the world around them was normal.

"The Sojourners: Life on the American Homefront During World War II" (now available from 1stBooks Library) is a fictional story based on Pender's own experiences.

"The Sojourners" takes readers on the journey of a lifetime that begins with a boy's family relocating to Elizabeth, N.J., so that the boy's father can work in the defense economy. The 9-year-old finds himself among other boys from similar families, but treasures his friendship with one in particular. This friendship becomes the backbone of Pender's story, wherein readers witness the musings of two aged men recalling their past as well as the nation's history.

Pender's novel faithfully follows the timelines of American history, from our official entry into World War II to the atomic age and the post-war changes in American life. To do this, Pender utilizes his extensive memory and in depth knowledge of World War II and its circumstances. Pender explains America's role in the war, before and after Pearl Harbor, with grace and ease.

Richard Pender is a US Army veteran, who served during the Korean War. His description of World War II is told through a child's eyes, filled with humorous incidents and cherished memories, yet the account succeeds in demonstrating sensitivity to the changing and difficult world. After the Korean War, Pender earned an engineering degree, having taken advantage of the GI Bill. Until his retirement in 1998, he worked as an engineer. He writes and does consulting on environmental and construction matters from his home in North Brunswick, N.J.
