The Secret Lives of Professors -- New Novel Looks Behind the Faculty Door for a Story of Lust and Murder

SAN DIEGO, July 18, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- What really goes on behind the closed mahogany doors of academia? In his new novel, Academic Affairs: Love and Murder in Academia (now available through 1stBooks), author Phillip Gay opens the faculty door for all to see.

Gay's novel is told through the eyes and mind of Christopher Mercer. Mercer is a professor of sociology who has troubles with social mores. After his wife leaves him for another man, Mercer finds himself falling into unusual romances and affairs. He teaches at Spencer College in northern New England and later at Pacific State University in San Diego. It is on these two campuses that the story unfolds. Academic Affairs tells the story of five murders that occur on these campuses -- murders that seem to follow Mercer.

"Academic Affairs is not only about death, it is also a series of love stories, making it a romance novel, as well as an action-packed/murder-mystery that gives the reader a close-up backstage view of the academic life," Gay says.

Romantic and suspenseful, Academic Affairs is a voyeuristic look into the lives of those who fill the halls of academia.

Gay is a graduate of Harvard University with a doctorate in sociology. He has published numerous works of fiction and non-fiction. Just prior to Academic Affairs, Gay published Modern South Africa (McGraw-Hill, 2001). Presently, he works as professor of sociology at San Diego State University and is working on a sequel to Academic Affairs.
