Beseeched by his wife, Nan, to attend the Methodist church with her, he consistently refused, taking an antagonistic view of God-related matters in order to pursue a life of education and business. This life continued until one night in February 2000 when he suddenly became a Christian, literally, overnight. In his new book, Here Lord (now available through 1stBooks), he discusses his sudden transformation and insatiable desire to pursue the Catholic faith at the age of 59.
A strange, but welcome change, Ditto writes about how he woke his wife up at 5:30 a.m. and said, "I know what we are supposed to be. We are supposed to be Catholics." Ditto writes that the Holy Spirit entered him that night. Overnight, he turned from a confrontational, negative, discontented man to a peaceful man dedicated to the love and spirit Christianity embodies, he writes. By April 2001, Ditto and his wife had joined the Catholic Church.
His new book was written in order to explain to their children, friends, family and themselves why they suddenly decided to become Catholic. He began to question his life with scrutiny and writes about how his negative self-image contributed to his rejection of God. He writes about the positive and profound affect that night and his subsequent study of Christianity has contributed to his life. Ditto hopes this book encourages anyone who believes they are too old or unworthy of asking for God's blessing to consider his amazing story.
Ditto spent most of his life in the field of education, receiving three degrees in elementary education, including a doctorate's degree. He was a grade school teacher, school principal and university professor. He entered the business field for financial reasons and became president and co-owner of his company. He and his wife, his high school sweetheart, moved from their home in Michigan to California so Ditto could pursue a business position. They have two children, Kim and Dean, as well as five grandsons: Joe, Jake, Josh, Alex and Nick.
