SAN DIEGO, Nov. 3, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Environmental Artist Wyland Hits the Road to Tell Southern California Students: "It's Time to Get Creative About Saving Our Ocean Planet."
WHO: World-renowned artist Wyland, 46, is known for
his mega- sized marine life murals in 12
countries and four continents. Over the past
20 years he has discussed environmental issues
with nearly 1,000,000 students. He has been
recognized for his conservation efforts by the
United Nations and the American National
Educator's Association, and holds the world's
record for the world's largest mural. His
work is seen by one billion people every year.
WHAT: The artist's "UnderWater Village" traveling
educational tour hits science museums and
aquariums in Southern California this week.
Developed by the artist and the Scripps
Institution of Oceanography (UCSD), the
11- city Underwater Village tour will welcome
more than 10,000 students, grades K-6, into
its hands-on world of marine art, science,
exploration, and expression. Program meets
national science standards.
WHEN / WHERE: Tuesday, Nov. 4 -- Discovery Science Center,
Santa Ana (9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)
Wednesday, Nov. 5 -- Aquarium of the Pacific,
Long Beach (9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)
Thursday, Nov. 6 -- Cabrillo Marine Aquarium,
San Pedro (8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.)
BACKGROUND: The live tour is part of a free bilingual
online conservation education program
designed to teach students about the
importance of the world's oceans, lakes,
rivers, streams and ponds. With scientists
predicting devastating losses in marine life
and fresh water ecosystems by 2050, it is up
to the students to learn about our planet's
marine world and find out what they can do to
protect it.
