Emulex LP9802 PCI-X HBA Achieves Qualification by Hitachi Data Systems

New Solaris Qualification Assures the LP9802's Interoperability with Hitachi Lightning and Thunder Storage Systems

COSTA MESA, Calif., Jan. 21, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the market leader in Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) and a leading supplier of intelligent building blocks for next generation storage networking systems, today announced that Hitachi Data Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT), has qualified Emulex's LP9802 PCI-X 2Gb/s Fibre Channel HBA for use with its Lightning 9900(tm), Lightning 9900 V Series, and Thunder 9500(tm) V Series storage systems. Hitachi Data Systems' qualification of Emulex's LP9802 with its storage systems ensures seamless operation of the two companies' products for customers using Solaris operating environments.

"The robust feature-set and broad interoperability of the Emulex LP9802 are demonstrated by its successful completion of the rigorous Hitachi Data Systems testing procedures," said Steve TenBarge, vice president, storage infrastructure product management, Hitachi Data Systems. "Hitachi Data Systems is committed to providing the most advanced, high performance networked storage solutions with the flexibility required to meet our customer's diverse business needs. Our ongoing work with Emulex helps us fulfill this commitment."

"Emulex continues to deliver robust solutions that are used for connectivity within industry-leading storage solutions from many of the world's leading storage providers, such as Hitachi Data Systems," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing for Emulex. "The intelligent functionality of the Emulex HBAs, including the LP9802, brings a significant value-add to the Hitachi Lightning and Thunder storage systems, and reduces management complexities with Emulex's centralized HBA management suite, HBAnyware."

The Hitachi Lightning 9900 V Series enterprise storage systems, with twice the capacity of any competing storage system, offer a platform that enables customers to simplify their infrastructures through massive consolidation. Combined with Hitachi storage software and the HiCommand(r) storage area management software suite, these systems support "set and forget" management, protect data assets and optimize resources. With the same set of APIs, software tools and management suite as Lightning 9900 V Series, the Thunder 9500 V Series modular storage systems offer virtualization, flexible configurations and intelligence for ease of management, plus high performance in a small footprint.

Emulex's LP9802, which has also been qualified by Hitachi Data Systems in Windows 2000 environments, is ideal for SANs based on Hitachi Data Systems' storage solutions, providing support for 2Gb/s Fibre Channel data rates, while delivering high performance. The Emulex family of HBAs offers firmware-based architecture and operating system driver compatibility across Emulex's entire HBA product line, which provides customers with a simplified upgrade path, reduced management complexities and also ensures a lower total cost of ownership. Emulex HBAs are fully compatible with drivers that support the company's new centralized HBA management suite, HBAnyware, which incorporates driver-based technology to enable complete management of Emulex HBAs and the ability to upgrade firmware anywhere in a SAN from a single console.
