Telenor Group chooses Nokia to expand broadband DSL networks in Norway, Sweden and other markets

Nokia has signed an international frame agreement with Telenor Group, for the supply of a range of broadband DSL solutions and related services for networks in Norway, Sweden and other relevant markets. Deliveries will begin in March and the expansion will be up and running during April.

Under the two-year deal, which also includes options for a further two years, Nokia will supply its latest generation D500 IP DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer), which delivers integrated IP functionality unlike any other IP DSLAM solution in the broadband industry.

Spanning across Norway and Sweden, the deliveries will comprise around 200,000 lines during 2004, bringing coverage to new areas, as well as enhancing existing sites. As a complete package, Nokia will also supply a full range of support services. In addition, Nokia may also support Telenor in other markets.

"The take up of xDSL in our markets is showing strong growth and Telenor aims to facilitate new services to customers, by adding additional capacity, coverage and bandwidth. With this agreement, we are preparing for future customer demand for content services, to maintain our position at the forefront of broadband services in the Nordic countries," says Ole-Henrik Waldenstrøm, Director, Telenor Networks, Networks Solutions.

"This is a significant agreement, in terms of underlining the strength of the Nokia D500 in advanced broadband markets. We are pleased to be able to strengthen our relationship with Telenor and meet the requirements for their aggressive rollout plans," says Markku Hynninen, Vice President, Broadband Systems, Networks, Nokia.

The Nokia D500 platform is ideal for Telenor in building an IP-centric network, which affords long-term cost savings and offers a future-proof investment for the launch of new broadband services. It supports ADSL and faster standards of ADSL, such as VDSL and ADSL 2 Plus, as well as features such as IP Multicasting. In practical terms, a single Nokia D500 can provide hundreds of residential homes with full-service access to video, voice and data services, to be delivered to PCs, TVs and mobile devices.
