Stora Enso and Xeikon International jointly presented an exciting new on-demand production line for CD and DVD packaging at Drupa 2004. The new concept, Stora Enso DBS Powered by Xeikon, is an automated online solution for printing, die cutting, assembling and filling DBS packs (Discbox Slider). The system provides disc producers with shorter lead times, greater cost efficiency and personalized packages made from paperboard.
In the integrated production line, Stora Enso Activation's DBS Pac Master is combined with a new DBS Converter, which enables online production of DBS packs, and a Xeikon 5000 digital color printing press. "Xeikon 5000 is the first digital printing press that can be used for quality color printing on high-grammage paper and board up to 350 gsm from reel," says Frank Jacobs, Marketing Manager at Xeikon. "Collaboration between Xeikon and Stora Enso has proven that digital color printing is capable of such a specific print in a true production line-up."
Cutting-edge technology
The new production line highlights the technological expertise inherent in both Stora Enso and Xeikon. Stora Enso's DBS packs have quickly made inroads into the CD and DVD packaging market. "The DBS packs are made from paperboard, which combines excellent design and printing with low weight, stiffness and durability. DBS is also an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution. End users are disc producers in the software, music, movies and games industries. Personalized DBS packs are particularly valuable in direct mailings," says Juha Lehtola, Vice President at Stora Enso Consumer Boards.
Xeikon 5000 reflects the most advanced technology currently available in digital printing. "Being web-fed, it offers smooth and seamless integration with third-party solutions. Thanks to numerous built-in, state-of-the-art features, Xeikon 5000 offers consistent quality and greatly improved reliability. Its unique 500 mm width and the possibility to add a fifth color to support spot colours make it ideal for this application and for packaging in general," says Jacobs.
Fruitful technical cooperation
Stora Enso and Xeikon International signed a technical cooperation agreement in April 2004. Both companies are world leaders in their lines of business. "Our cooperation with Xeikon is an example of the type of value chain re-engineering that opens up completely new business models. Corresponding new models for other areas of application are currently under development at our InnoCentre," says Lehtola. Total solutions like the Stora Enso DBS Powered by Xeikon are only possible through close and fruitful cooperation between companies with leading technologies.
