Emulex Announces EMC E-Lab Qualification of its Fibre Channel HBAs for use with VMware Virtual Infrastructure Software

Emulex HBAs Help Maximize Server and Storage Consolidation and Manageability

COSTA MESA, Calif., June 29, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the world leader in Fibre Channel host bus adapters and a provider of intelligent building blocks for the storage networking industry, today announced that its enterprise family of LightPulse HBAs are qualified as E-Lab Tested for use with the VMware ESX Server virtual infrastructure software in conjunction with EMC Symmetrix and CLARiiON networked storage solutions. The E-Lab Tested qualification process is a series of exhaustive functionality and reliability tests to ensure the interoperability of all components that make up a multi-vendor information storage network.

The VMware virtual infrastructure solution is designed to simplify management of storage networks by abstracting the hardware and software to enable more seamless SAN operation. With more than 2.5 million users and 5,500 enterprise server customers worldwide, the VMware solution provides a consolidation platform that has helped customers save millions of dollars by maximizing storage and server utilization. The flexible Emulex firmware-based HBA architecture fully complements the VMware model by delivering the hardware flexibility required for more seamless server and storage operation without interruption or reconfiguration of the operating system and applications.

"Working with Emulex to qualify its market-leading HBAs for complete compatibility with VMware software ensures end users receive the highest levels of resource utilization and system availability," said Michael Mullany, vice president of marketing, VMware. "Emulex's unique firmware-based HBA architecture fully complements EMC storage environments utilizing VMware virtual infrastructure software by providing the flexibility required for maximizing server and storage manageability."

"The VMware solution is designed to provide a unique approach to storage and server consolidation within mission-critical data center environments," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing, Emulex Corp. "Emulex's high performance, enterprise-class HBAs are the ideal connectivity solution for environments requiring greater resource utilization, seamless server and storage management and consolidation."

The Emulex family of LightPulse(tm) PCI and PCI-X connectivity solutions, including the LP10000, LP10000DC, LP9802 and LP9002 HBAs, are qualified for use with VMware ESX Server version 2.1. Emulex HBAs offer a unique firmware-based architecture and operating system driver compatibility across Emulex's entire HBA product line, which provides customers with a simplified upgrade path, reduced management complexities and also ensures a lower total cost of ownership. Emulex HBAs are fully compatible with drivers that support the company's new centralized HBA management suite, HBAnyware, which incorporates driver-based technology to enable complete management of Emulex HBAs and the ability to upgrade firmware anywhere in a SAN from a single console.
