COSTA MESA, Calif., Sept. 2, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) (www.cdg.org) today announced that its Executive Director, Perry LaForge, will outline the CDMA community's vision for the future of IMT-2000 in his keynote address at the 2004 ITU Telecom Asia conference in Busan, Korea. The conference session, entitled "Making 3G Global," will take place on Thursday, Sept. 9, at 2:30 p.m. in Room 205-206 of the Busan Exhibition and Conference Center (Bexco).
As the first IMT-2000 technology deployed, the first to achieve global reach and the first to offer broadband wireless services, CDMA2000(r) provides the perfect example of the globalization and promise of 3G. Today, there are 98 networks providing commercial 3G CDMA2000 services to 112.6 million customers I sin 46 countries around the world.
"CDMA2000 has been rapidly adopted by the consumer, as witnessed by the technology surpassing the 100 million subscriber milestone in the second quarter of this year," said Perry LaForge executive director of the CDMA Development Group. "CDMA2000 users account for 96 percent of all 3G subscribers worldwide and the customer base is increasing at the rate of more than 4.6 million new subscribers per month. Clearly a tremendously successful technology, CDMA2000 demonstrates the true potential of 3G."
CDMA2000 1X and its broadband evolution, 1xEV-DO, support the most advanced data services on the cellular market today, providing further impetus for success. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, with 300-600 kbps average throughput and 2.4 Mbps peak data speeds, enables operators to offer innovative multimedia services and broadband access to the Internet. Customers are using their phones to watch videos and live streaming news, to send and receive video mail, and for picture messaging, banking and e-commerce. CDMA2000 1xEV-DV, offering simultaneous voice and data at peak speeds of 3.1 Mbps, will continue the evolution of CDMA2000 3G services. As with CDMA2000 1X, South Korea is expected to see the first 1xEV-DV offering later this year.
