After The Bell Market Commentary
On Wednesday, shares of Amgen Inc. (Nasdaq:AMGN), the world's biggest biotechnology company, fell to $55.65 in after-hours trading from a Nasdaq close at $56.41 after it reported lower third- quarter net profit. Net profit fell to $236 million, or 18 cents per share, from $612 million, or 46 cents, a year earlier. Total revenue for the quarter rose 23 percent to $2.7 billion. Amgen also raised its 2004 total revenue forecast to a range of $10.3 billion to $10.6 billion from the previous range of $9.7 billion to $10.4 billion. Chief Executive Kevin Sharer said the decision to raise forecasts was driven by the performance of Aranesp for anemia in kidney dialysis and cancer patients and Enbrel for arthritis and psoriasis.
