Commentary:

The Dow began the year 1916 at roughly 70 points. The Dow is now at roughly 10,500 points. That is a huge move, right? Sort of. See, that move is the equivalent of approximately a less-than-6% ANNUAL gain. LESS THAN 6%! (Now, this only speaks to price, and does not include dividend payments, but if you are a trader -- as opposed to long-term investor, DIVIDENDS don't really matter -- STOCK price matters.)

Traders should use more realistic numbers to determine what kind of profit they want out of a trade. How often do you hear of a trader that buys a stock at $10, holds as it moves over $11 one week later, then sells on the way down at $9.50? We don't understand that kind of trade mentality. A move from $10 to $11 is a 10% move. Annualized, 10% compounded weekly turns $10,000 into $1.2 MILLION. Okay, now that would be an incredible trade record, but it does make our point.

If trading will be your business, then treat trading like a business and not a slot-machine. Take gains that beat the market average, and take them consistently. For every guy that "doubles his money" on a stock, there are surely hundreds more that lose their shirt. If you can turn a trade into a 6% profit (or better), why not either A) Take profits, or B) at least move your stop/loss up to protect your gains?

Mainstream wallstreet wants you to "buy and hold." However, what mainstream wallstreet doesn't tell you is that "buy and hold" means you may not be able to retire after a year like 2000. Like we said, "TAKE YOUR 10%."
