Emulex Fibre Channel HBAs Certified ca smart for Use with Computer Associates' BrightStor Storage Management Solution

Companies Augment Functionality of Management Applications and Take Advantage of Capabilities of Microsoft Windows Server 2003, including the Virtual Disk Service (VDS), Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), the Windows Storport Driver Model

COSTA MESA, Calif., Jan. 31, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the industry's preeminent source for a broad range of advanced storage networking infrastructure solutions, announced today that its LP10000 family of Fibre Channel HBAs has received Computer Associates International, Inc.'s (NYSE:CA) ca smart seal of excellence by virtue of its qualification for use with current versions of BrightStor ARCserve Backup and the BrightStor ARCserve Backup Enterprise Option for VSS Hardware Snap-Shot.

The ca smart seal of excellence is awarded to solutions that integrate seamlessly with CA products, enabling customers to take advantage of best-in-class enterprise technologies while minimizing cost, time-to-benefit and risk.

Additional qualifications include support for BrightStor SAN Manager and BrightStor SAN Designer running on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 platforms, which utilizes the Microsoft Storport driver coupled with the Emulex Storport miniport driver to fully optimize storage networking functionality. Released with the Windows Server 2003 platform, Storport is a new driver model designed to match the high performance capabilities of SANs and hardware-based disk arrays.

The Emulex HBAs and Emulex Storport miniport driver also provides support for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 storage technologies including Virtual Disk service (VDS) and Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS), which may be leveraged via CA's BrightStor storage management applications. VDS and VSS are core services of Windows Server 2003 that provide a single user interface for managing multi-vendor storage at the block level and enable application-aware snapshot capabilities (shadow copies), respectively.

"Emulex's HBAs are designed to fully complement the functionality of CA's BrightStor solutions and also take advantage of enhanced capabilities of the Windows Server 2003 platform," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing, Emulex Corp. "We remain committed to ongoing strategic efforts with CA to ensure the latest generation of BrightStor SAN management applications, coupled with Emulex HBAs, offers end users a reliable and proven solution to meet their SAN design, configuration and management needs."

CA's BrightStor ARCserve Backup enables customers to manage backup/recovery operations across heterogeneous environments, improving the efficiency of those operations and helping to ensure effective protection of all critical data assets. The BrightStor ARCserve Backup Enterprise Option for VSS Hardware Snap-Shot enables BrightStor ARCserve Backup customers to manage and use hardware snapshot-based copies of data sets to deliver instant point-in-time recovery from disk. It also supports zero-impact backups and staging to disk, disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) backup, vaulting and laboratory testing.

BrightStor SAN Designer and BrightStor SAN Manager optimize the health and availability of SAN infrastructure through rapid design, real-time monitoring and centralized management of SAN resources.

"Enterprise customers want to take advantage of the latest advances in storage technology -- including the Storport driver model, VDS and VSS -- without burdening their infrastructure management teams with new tools, additional workloads or increased complexity," said Anders Lofgren, vice president of BrightStor storage management at CA. "By working closely with Emulex and Microsoft, CA is providing this critical transparent technology access so that our customers can use their familiar BrightStor solutions while significantly enhancing the efficiency of their networked storage environments."

The Emulex Storport miniport driver, which was designed from the ground-up to deliver the full range of Storport features for Windows-based SAN solutions, improves the management capabilities within heterogeneous SAN environments. Utilizing Emulex HBAs and its Storport miniport driver in conjunction with BrightStor SAN management solutions enables end users to take advantage of more advanced management functionality in Windows Server 2003-based SANs.

"Microsoft is pleased that Computer Associates and Emulex are working together to support the new storage technologies in Windows Server 2003 including VSS, VDS, Storport and MPIO," said Dr. Claude Lorenson, technical product manager, storage technologies at Microsoft Corp. "We are confident the Emulex Fibre Channel HBAs are ideal for customers seeking to enhance the management capabilities of both enterprise and midrange SANs."
