Aker Kvaerner wins contracts for boiler island and evaporation plant upgrades

Kvaerner Power, part of the Aker Kvaerner group, will deliver a boiler island to Falu Energi & Vatten AB which is a community owned energy company producing and supplying district heating and electricity to the city of Falun in Central Sweden some 200 km north west of Stockholm.

The new power plant which operates in parallel with the existing energy production unit, is designed for 30 MW heating capacity and 9 MW electricity capacity. With this new investment, Falu's district heating production will be almost independent of using fossil fuels and oil. This will have positive environmental effects and also improves the economy of district heating.

Kvaerner Power's delivery will consist of a power boiler (31 MWth) using bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) technology with auxiliary equipment and a turbine. The boiler will burn biofuels like wood chips, bark and saw dust. The delivery consists also of a flue gas condensing plant which improves the thermal efficiency of the power plant. The boiler island will be ready in the beginning of 2007.

One of the world's largest producers of short-fiber bleached eucalyptus pulp and a customer with long relations to Aker Kvaerner, CENIBRA (Celulose Nipo-Brasileira S.A) in Brazil is investing to increase its annual pulp mill production from 940,000 tons up to 1,140,000 tons. The mill is located in the county of Belo Oriente, in the South-Eastern part of Brazil.

Kvaerner Power will upgrade the mill's two existing evaporation plants and increase capacity with 20 per cent to 1,060 tons of evaporated water per hour. Kvaerner Power will also upgrade the system to burn the mill's strong odorous gases and supply a new white liquor oxidation plant to oxidate white liquor for further use and savings of chemicals in the mill's fiberline area. The upgrades will be ready in the autumn of 2006.

Stora Enso's Kemijärvi pulp mill in Finland is modernising its odorous gas treatment system. Kvaerner Power will supply the back-up system for burning non-condensible gases and an expansion to burn weak gases from the mill.
