DonHarrold.net Commentary -- April 18, 2006
Gold is well into the $600 range, now closing at $618.40 per ounce. We're almost $200/ounce up since I first stared recommending "GLD" at about $420.00. That's great. Well, partially it's up because of strong global demand but also because of U.S. debt and deficits. But, as traders, we buy what we think is right. There may come a day I write to sell gold and to buy the U.S. dollar. But, that day is probably going to be years away. I expect gold to continue to move higher. That's why I was still recommending it last week when it was at a 25 year high, and now it's at another 25 year high today.
Suncor just closed at an all time high on Monday, and so did BHP Billiton. These are the top two fundamental commodity plays, along with "GLD" that I've been saying to buy for weeks now. Both are up very nicely from the initial alert.
Looking at the major indices Monday and scanning through stocks, it was almost entirely commodity stocks that were up, while everything else was down. I was also watching Larry Kudlow on CNBC and they were talking about bank stocks. The outlook wasn't so great at all. Last week I said to sell bank stocks. The run is pretty much over there. Everyone's bought a house, so now what? Time to get out of banks.
Financial "Advisors" try to tell you to be diversified. For me, I tell you where to be. My philosophy is that to take on less risk, you just do what is right. Simple. Even if it's only a few sectors. After all, if you're making more money, then that's just plain less risk, isn't it? -- Neil Batho, Analyst
