Interoute Selects Infinera for Pan-European Network

Digital Architecture Slashes Service Delivery Times From Weeks to Days

SUNNYVALE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- October 30, 2006 -- Interoute has selected Infinera to provide the optical network for its next-generation pan-European network. The new network will provide Interoute with new levels of capacity, service delivery, and competitive advantage across its pan-European footprint.

Headquartered in London, Interoute operates a 35,000 fiber-kilometer network spanning 77 cities in 21 nations in Europe, including every major European business center. The Interoute network is used by major incumbent telecom companies, many governments, and more than 14,000 corporate customers. One billion Euros ($1.26 billion) of e-commerce is handled by Interoute's data centers every day making it a key part of Europe's digital supply chain. Interoute selected Infinera to leverage its fiber-rich network with capacity of 100 Gigabits per second (Gb/s) up to 800 Gb/s on a route, and to dramatically reduce service delivery times.

Interoute plans to use its Infinera network to deliver high-capacity wholesale services, including 10 Gb/s waves and 10 Gigabit Ethernet services, which are seeing rapid uptake as the entire European telecom market grows to accommodate Internet growth. Taking advantage of Infinera's digital architecture, Interoute plans to offer service delivery to its customers in less than 10 days, as compared to delivery lead times of up to 8 weeks required by competitors utilizing traditional DWDM networks.

"The Infinera Digital Optical Networking system is the most advanced, IP-optimised optical service platform for next-generation data networks," said Interoute CTO Matthew Finnie. "We are currently lighting fiber in 100 and 200 Gb/s chunks, at a rate of over 1,500km per week. We believe that no other operator can match the speed at which we can upgrade our footprint across Europe to deliver high-capacity bandwidth to our customers."

Network Installation in Three Months

The Infinera DTN is the first optical system to combine high-capacity transport, fully reconfigurable switching, and network-aware GMPLS service intelligence in one platform. Infinera's Digital Optical Networking architecture, based on the first photonic integrated circuits deployed in optical networks, enables large networks to be installed and turned up in record time. Interoute has already begun deploying the Infinera network and plans to complete the full upgrade of its network within three months, with its Infinera network live and in service by mid-January 2007. Traditional DWDM networks could take two to four times as long to install and deploy a network of this size.

"We are thrilled to be working with a prominent leading-edge operator like Interoute," said Infinera co-founder and CEO Jagdeep Singh. "By making digital optical networking available to the vast majority of Europe's 300 million people, Interoute will bring advanced services to its customers, and a new networking architecture to a very large market."

The extensive Interoute network is an important milestone in Infinera's European expansion. The Infinera platform is very well-suited to the European market, with its densely populated urban centers, highly competitive operator environment, and rapidly growing Internet penetration. "Our product is a great fit for Europe, and with the sales, service, and support infrastructure now in place, we can deliver the competitive advantages of Digital Optical Networking to operators throughout Europe," said Jagdeep Singh.
