Seattle Sutton, "Healthy Eating Guru," Offers Advice to Dieters

Weight Loss Resolutions Are Attainable

OTTAWA, IL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- January 2, 2007 -- For most Americans, this time of year conjures up New Year's resolutions with all the best intentions. At the top of most lists is weight loss. Seattle Sutton, RN, BSN, Founder and President of Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating (SSHE), and well-known "healthy eating guru," has some sage advice for those navigating through the first few days of the New Year.

According to Sutton, New Year's resolutions should not be unrealistic or unattainable; otherwise, one will only be let down when the goal is not reached. And, setting such goals will most likely negatively impact any future efforts for weight loss. Instead, set realistic, healthy goals. Start small and, when that goal is attained, set another goal until the end goal is achieved.

Sutton also warns about fad diets and quick answers especially during this time of year. Since many people seek out quick results but quickly learn they don't work in the long term, therefore she suggests thinking about it as a lifestyle change instead. And, to understand that healthy eating is all about being able to do it for the rest of your life, so if you can't continue it for a lifetime then it is most likely a fad diet. Be weary of such claims and promises, because they will do more harm than good in the long run.

"Remember what you learned about proper nutrition and balanced diets years ago? Well, it's true -- it's all about calories in vs. calories out. If you eat more than you burn, then you'll gain weight. It all comes down to portion and calorie control. And, to eliminate an entire food group is not something that is recommended by health and medical professionals. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," said Sutton.

Sutton offers one last tidbit of advice, "Sometimes you have to try and try again before you can succeed. Don't give up and always stay positive!"

Sutton offers 10 tips for sensible and safe weight loss:

1. Portion and calorie control are key for weight loss and management.
2. Choose healthy food choices -- fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish
    and chicken breasts.
3. Conduct weekly weight checks. Limit it to once a week, at the same
time and on the same scale.
4. Limit alcohol consumption. Do so sparingly, if you must indulge, and
choose one glass (2-4 ounces) of wine instead of a mixed drink.
Red wine, in moderation, has been found to have many health benefits.
5. Avoid temptations whenever and wherever possible. Bring healthy
meals and snacks when options may be limited.
6. If invited to a party, eat a small, healthy snack before going --
yogurt, fruit or vegetables are ideal. Also, do not congregate near
    the food tables and bar.
7. Try to do some moderate exercise every day to expend calories.
Remember the "calories in vs. calories out" theory. If you
currently don't have a routine, make sure to consult a doctor
    before undertaking anything new.
8. Drink plenty of water and get the proper amount of rest your body
needs to rejuvenate itself. Too little sleep has been found to
interfere with one's ability to lose weight and maintain a healthy
    weight.
9. Don't procrastinate and say you will "diet tomorrow" and consume
unhealthy foods. Instead, think of it as a lifestyle change and
make every day a healthy food choice day.
10. One's greatest asset in life is their health, so make sure to keep
it top priority. The basis of good health is healthy eating.
