Huhtamaki's Cyclero® wins Alufoil Trophy 2007

Huhtamaki has won an Alufoil Trophy 2007 for the first market use of its revolutionary 'Cyclero' flexible packaging concept.

Used to create an easy open and re-close circular container for Amaroy Kaffee Pads, Head Judge David Smith, Kraft Foods' Director Packaging Global Technology and Quality International described the pack as a "very creative lightweight hermetic pack blending rigid and flexible packaging options, promising a lot of future opportunities across a wide range of products".

"Winning the award was important as we have launched a completely new, innovative and revolutionary concept for the flexible packaging and aluminium foil sector," said Martin Hauck, Marketing Director Flexibles Europe, Huhtamaki Ronsberg.

The European Aluminium Foil Association is the international body representing companies engaged in the rolling and rewinding of alufoil and in the manufacture of alufoil containers and of all kind of flexible packaging.

First Cyclero contains coffee pads
The tremendous success of coffee pads, which enable end-users to make hot drinks of many different flavors by using a single piece of equipment, represented a new challenge for the packaging industry. Coffee pads are not supposed to be squashed or folded and the coffee flavor is best if not exposed to oxygen. Cyclero is a perfect solution for coffee pads and Aldi Süd, one of the world's largest discount retailers, is the first to use the new Cyclero packaging concept on FFS machines supplied by the Optima Group using the ultrasonic sealing technology from Herrmann Ultraschalltechnik.

With Cyclero, the pads are simple to take out, the product and aroma protection has been optimized and the low weight of the package is a benefit in logistics and makes Cyclero an environmentally sound solution. These are just a few of the advantages that mark the beginning of a new era in the flexible packaging market - and not just for coffee pads.

Flexibles skills
Cyclero is basically a logical optimization of conventional stand-up pouches without the sealed seams on the sides that determine the appearance and haptic properties of the packaging. Cyclero maintains the advantages of flexible packaging over conventional can, jar and board packaging.

The new packaging can be used for many applications. They range from isotonic thirst-quenchers and other non-carbonated drinks that are consumed when out and about, to snacks, cereals and instant products as well as microwaveable ready meals that can be heated up directly in the Cyclero.

"Cyclero is soon to be launched for non-carbonated beverages as well", says Martin Hauck. "The food industry is particularly interested in new ways to make products stand out at the point of sale and Cyclero creates new design potential. The excellent printability of the packaging laminate together with the innovative shape is bound to be an eye-catcher. "
