Cisco Adds 3G Wireless to Its Integrated Services Routers, Enabling More Connectivity Options for Enterprises and New Business Opportunities for Service Providers

AT&T, Sprint, Telefónica Móviles España and Verizon Wireless First to Trial New Cisco IP NGN Innovation

ORLANDO, FL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 27, 2007 -- CTIA Wireless 2007® -- Cisco® (NASDAQ: CSCO) today announced significant wireless enhancements to its integrated services routers, adding an integrated third-generation (3G) wireless connectivity option and doubling the scalability of its integrated wireless local-area network (LAN) support. This solution is part of the Cisco Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture and is enabling service providers to offer 3G wireless connectivity to enterprise branch office customers demanding the highest-availability access to business-critical applications across the wide-area network (WAN).

Four leading mobile network operators -- AT&T, Sprint, Telefónica Móviles España and Verizon Wireless -- have trialed Cisco's new 3G Wireless WAN High-Speed Interface Card (HWIC) solution for their enterprise customers. Separate cards support Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks.

The integrated solution enables service providers to dramatically increase the adoption of revenue-generating 3G services. New streams of revenue can be realized through a variety of services made possible by the combination of the 3G Wireless WAN HWIC solution and the Cisco Integrated Services Routers (ISRs) -- the platform of choice for the delivery of profitable managed services for an empowered branch experience.

With more than 2 million units shipped, the Cisco ISR has a significant installed base in enterprise branch offices, as well as medium-sized and small businesses. Such a presence provides a large existing market for 3G service providers to quickly address with such new offerings as:

--  Automatic WAN failover service for business continuity;
-- Supplemental bandwidth access when the primary WAN link is over
    utilized;
-- Rapidly deployable primary WAN connectivity for temporary sites and
    businesses requiring portability; and
-- Rapidly deployable primary WAN connectivity for remote locations
    lacking wireline infrastructure.

"Companies and branches with fewer than 100 employees stand to gain a great deal by deploying 3G wireless applications," said Tere' Bracco, senior research director for enterprise at Current Analysis. "In fact, for small businesses and municipalities that require rapid setup or temporary connectivity, or that face situations in which land lines are not feasible, 3G wireless offers the ability to bring up a new site quickly and cost effectively. Using the integrated services available on the Cisco Integrated Services Routers, the Cisco 3G Wireless WAN HWIC solution can also provide instant and mobile communications during disasters and service outages."

Accelerating the Deployment of 3G WAN Data Services to Businesses

By partnering with Cisco, mobile network operators can make their 3G WAN services available to a wide range of enterprises and small and medium-sized businesses looking for greater business flexibility and the availability of business applications throughout the organization.

"The Cisco 3G Wireless WAN HWIC solution will work in conjunction with AT&T's Wireless WAN Connectivity service to provide our customers with a truly diverse and secure wireless broadband backup that is built into their Cisco ISR," said Jeff Bradley, vice president of wireless business data services, AT&T. "This type of self-contained solution that brings together wireline and wireless is groundbreaking for our industry and we are pleased to be a key component of it. Our joint AT&T and Cisco offering will resonate very well with customers who need to work to ensure that the flow of critical information is continuous, regardless of the situation."

"Offering services enabled by the Cisco 3G Wireless WAN HWIC solution builds on our commitment to deliver converged and mobility solutions to our enterprise and public sector customers through our industry-leading Mobile Broadband and IP networks," said Tony Krueck, vice president of product management and development, Sprint. "Sprint and Cisco's close collaboration on this solution will soon allow businesses the flexibility of rapid data connectivity deployment when and where needed and seamless, secure access to critical applications to help ensure business continuity."

"With the Cisco 3G Wireless WAN HWIC trial we are working on a fixed-mobile convergent solution in which 3G Mobile Access could be used as a very useful back-up option, improving the set of back-up possibilities adding more diversity in the access," said Alfonso Perea, manager of interactive service development, Telefonica Móviles España. "On the other hand, 3G Mobile Access could be an alternative of main access depending on the environment conditions and customer requirements."

"We are continuing to expand our EV-DO and EV-DO Rev A network and with the demand among enterprise and business customers for a more diverse set of backup link options to help ensure seamless connectivity. Cisco's 3G Wireless WAN access solution is well-suited to fulfill this need," said Cindy Patterson, vice president of enterprise data sales, Verizon Wireless. "Furthermore, the Cisco 3G Wireless WAN HWIC solution helps enable our enterprise customers to realize cost savings and operational efficiencies that they welcome in order to grow their businesses."

New Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Module

Cisco today also announced new capabilities that enable the delivery of business applications over wired or wireless infrastructures, or when transitioning between the two. Together, these capabilities demonstrate that the Cisco ISRs offer more wireless capabilities and more integrated services than any other branch or business router.

The new Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Module (WLCM) scales the number of access points supported on the router and can centrally manage eight or 12 access points. It enables secure WLAN coverage, service consistency and mobility over a larger office space, as well as enhanced security, voice, guest access, and location services. Supporting a larger number of access points also increases operational efficiency and simplifies IT management in remote sites. Voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) is enabled by the integrated WLCM, which enables voice security and continuity across the entire business space. Latency issues that are typical to VoWLAN deployments are reduced by the supported survivable local authentication access protocol (LEAP) on the WLCM.

Unified Wired-Wireless Solution

With integrated routing, switching, security, highly secure wireless local-area network (WLAN), virtual private network (VPN), voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) and now wireless WAN capabilities on a single integrated services platform, Cisco is the first to offer customers service interoperability, operational efficiency and investment protection while accelerating application deployment and reducing network cost and complexity.

"AT&T, Sprint, Telefónica Móviles España and Verizon Wireless are at the forefront of advanced 3G services delivery for the 'empowered wireless branch,'" said Ian Pennell, senior vice president and general manager, Access Routing Technology Group, Cisco. "By incorporating the Cisco 3G Wireless WAN HWIC solution directly into our industry leading integrated service routers, Cisco is providing flexible and powerful options to drive enterprise adoption of 3G services through our partner mobile network operators."

Pricing and Expected Availability

The Cisco 3G Wireless WAN HWIC solution is scheduled to be available starting in summer 2007 and has a U.S. list price of $850. The new Cisco Wireless LAN Controller that scales to eight or 12 access points is scheduled to be available starting May 2007 and has U.S. list prices of $4,750 for eight access points and $6,500 for 12 access points. The Nokia Intellisync VoWLAN client for the Nokia E-series phones is scheduled to be available from Cisco beginning in May 2007 and will have a list price of $200.
