Targeted at OEM Applications Such as Networking, Telecommunications, and Embedded Computing, SMART's Industrial-Grade Cards Have Been Ruggedized to Withstand Adverse Conditions and Extreme Temperatures
FREMONT, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 7, 2007 -- SMART Modular Technologies (WWH), Inc. (SMART)
(NASDAQ: SMOD), a leading independent manufacturer of memory modules,
embedded computing subsystems, and TFT-LCD display products, has released a
new line of industrial-grade secure digital (SD) memory cards. SMART's
industrial SD memory cards have been optimized to withstand adverse
conditions and extreme temperatures when used in a variety of applications
such as those in the networking, telecommunications, embedded computing,
mobile, and automotive markets.
The SD card form factor is generally regarded as the fastest growing memory
card form factor worldwide and benefits from open standard licensing
through the SD Card Association. In addition to being small and thin, the
SD form factor offers simpler serial interfaces and fewer active pins as
compared to older parallel form factors. All of these features combine to
make it easier for OEMs to design the cards into their products. The
popularity of SD has made it attractive for industrial applications, but
commercial-grade SD memory cards have not been able to withstand these more
demanding environments. SMART's industrial-grade SD is able to bridge this
gap and provide the form factor, performance, and reliability necessary for
these rigorous applications.
Featuring a capacity range of 256MB to 2GB, SMART's industrial SD memory
cards are manufactured using a state-of-the-art injection-molded process
that makes the SD memory card significantly more robust and better suited
for use in the more demanding industrial environment than a standard SD
memory card. These RoHS-compliant devices are also compliant with the
Secure Digital Specifications Version 1.1 and 1.0.1 and function across the
full industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C. "The availability of
industrial-grade SD cards will create hundreds of applications in rugged
environments where ordinary SD cards could not survive," said Adrienne
Downey, Senior Analyst with Semico Research Corp. "That will cause the
market for industrial-grade SD cards to grow at a CAGR well above 20% for
the current period through 2010."
"To support OEMs' specific needs for an industrialized version of the
popular SD form factor, SMART now offers a product that adds a noticeable
robustness to the standard SD memory card. Manufactured with single level
cell (SLC) flash, SMART's cards are considerably more reliable than
commercial-grade SD cards made using multi level cell (MLC) flash," said
Alan Gulachenski, SMART's Senior Director of Advanced Memory Solutions.
"Now, OEMs can leverage the industry-standard SD form factor and user
familiarity for industrial applications with the confidence of SMART
reliability."
