MEF Americas Drives Development of Participation TV Guidelines in the United States

Issues Draft Participation TV Code of Practice for Industry Consultation and Adoption


LOS ANGELES, May 24, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- The Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF) has today published a draft Code of Practice (Code) outlining best practices for Participation Television (P-TV) in the United States. P-TV services typically provide viewers the ability to interact with television shows -- for example, where viewers are asked to text in votes or enter sweepstakes using their mobile phones. Often these shows integrate enhanced content with premium rate mobile services. P-TV is expected to experience continuing fast growth in coming months. The Code will apply to P-TV services operating in the U.S., and is available online at the Mobile Entertainment Forum's website: www.m-e-f.org.

The Code has been developed to ensure viewers have the best experience using their mobile phone to vote or enter P-TV sweepstakes with complete confidence in the U.S., as this type of P-TV programming continues to grow. It seeks to achieve transparency in P-TV operations by developing structured and auditable processes, determining responsibility and accountability in each stage and creating an action plan for addressing errors. This initiative comes hot on the heels of a MEF workshop in the U.K. that discussed processes for companies using P-TV there, and took the first steps in launching a draft framework for discussion. While the P-TV market is a significant industry in the U.K. (in excess of $300 million), the U.S. P-TV market is at a relatively earlier stage of development. As recently released network schedules indicate, P-TV is of growing importance to broadcasters.
