Dirty Dogs? Filthy Felines? Not So, According to New Moen Survey Which Reveals How Americans Bathe Their Pets

NORTH OLMSTED, OH--(Marketwire - June 21, 2007) - Dogs and cats and turtles, oh my! With more than 377 million pets in the United States*, Americans are becoming increasingly enamored with their "furkids." And the health of the pet industry is fetching: sales figures were expected to surpass $38 billion in 2006.** So with that many pets in our country, one company was drawn to ask... do we keep them clean? How often do we bathe man's best friends? And just where do we polish our pets?

The answers to these and many other pet bathing questions are revealed in a recent consumer survey conducted on behalf of Moen Incorporated by Yankelovich Partners, Inc. The phone poll of 600 adults nationwide pulls back the shower curtain to uncover how we take care of our furry -- and not so furry -- friends.

Splish Splash, Pets in the Bath

According to the survey, most American pet owners (47 percent) bathe their pets in their home bathtub or shower. And those who wash their pets in the bathtub or shower are more likely to be under the age of 45***, work, are married and have children over the age of 18.

"While most pet owners bathe their pets in their tub or shower, our research also showed that among those who don't, more than 40 percent have considered bathing their household pets in these spots," said Jack Suvak, Moen's director of marketing research.

Twenty two percent bathe their pets "in the driveway or outside my home." These pet owners tend to also be under the age of 45 and work, but have a higher household income of over $50,000 and aren't married.

Surprisingly, 15 percent bathe their pets in the bathroom, kitchen or utility sink, six percent take their pets to a groomers to be bathed, and about one percent bathe their pets at a veterinarian or kennel.

Dogs and Cats and Turtles, Oh My!

The Moen survey also reveals some interesting facts about the kinds of pets we bathe at home. Most of us bathe dogs or cats, but there were also some out of the ordinary responses:

-- Nearly five percent have bathed a bird or guinea pig
-- About four percent have bathed a lizard or snake
-- One percent have bathed a rabbit
-- Less than one percent have bathed a horse, ferret, turtle, hamster or
    pig

How Frequently is Fido Bathed?

Finally, Moen asked how often Americans bathe their pets at home. "To our surprise, among those who bathe their pets at home, nearly a third (31 percent) bathe their pets once a month; and a large majority (21 percent) bathe their pets once a week, if not more often," added Suvak.

Those bathing their pets most often were between 16-44 years old, have a household income of less than $50,000, work and own their homes, aren't married and don't have young children.

Of the 600 respondents, only 27 percent have never owned a household pet. These Americans are more likely to be married males, don't work and don't have young children.
