The carbon trading market - Exponential growth, but how does it work?
The Kyoto Protocol commits industrialised countries to reducing CO2 emissions by an average of 5.2% below 1990 levels by 2008-2012[1].
To help achieve these targets, the European Union initiated the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) in 2005. The scheme commits Member States to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by an average EU 8%, in line with the so-called 'Burden Sharing Agreement' between the different EU countries.
The result of this and other schemes is exponential growth in the carbon trading market. According to the World Bank, the global carbon market has dubbled in 2006 - to USD 22,5 billion from USD 9,4 billion in 2005.
But how does emissions trading work? What are the advantages and disadvantages? What type of companies are involved and does the scheme really force them to reduce emissions? What is the difference between carbon trading and carbon banking and what is the role of a bank in this process?
Fortis is a pioneer in and market leader in the field of carbon trading, with over 200 clients. To raise awareness of this increasingly important activity among the media, Fortis is organising a press briefing in Brussels on 5th July.
