Finisar Demonstrates Interoperability of Chirp Managed Laser (CML(TM)) and Optical Duobinary (ODB) Technologies Over 200 km at 10 Gbps Without Dispersion Compensation at ECOC 2007
Becomes Only Company to Offer Two Solutions for Metro, Regional, and Long-Haul 10G DWDM Transport
SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - September 17, 2007) - Showcasing key technologies that it recently
acquired, Finisar Corporation (NASDAQ: FNSR) today announced an
interoperability demonstration between its Chirp Managed Laser (CML™)
and Optical Duobinary (ODB) technologies, transmitting 10 Gbps traffic over
200 km of single mode fiber. Finisar is the first company to offer its
customers these two methods for implementing 10 Gbps DWDM transport,
providing telecommunications system vendors with a wider range of
technologies and options to maximize performance, reliability, and cost for
Metro, Regional, and Long Haul applications. This demonstration will be
held on September 17-19 during ECOC 2007 in Berlin, in Finisar's booth
#17048.
In March, Finisar acquired two companies, AZNA, LLC and Kodeos
Communications, Inc., which were market leaders in CML™ and ODB
transmission technology, respectively. Both of these technologies extend
optical reach at 10 Gbps without requiring optical dispersion compensation.
Finisar has completed the successful integration of these companies and
their products into Finisar's portfolio and will demonstrate complete
interoperability of these technologies while reliably transporting traffic
over 200 km.
In addition to transporting 10 Gbps traffic over longer reaches without
requiring dispersion compensation, the CML™ for Extended Reach is
narrowly tunable, offering the best balance between ease of inventory
management and cost by reducing supply chain complexity by a factor of 4 or
8 at a more competitive price than fully tunable lasers. With a high
output power of 4-7 dBm, low power consumption, and small footprint from an
industry-standard butterfly box format, CML™ technology provides the
most cost-effective approach for a wide range of applications.
Alternatively, Finisar's 300-pin MSA ODB Transponders for Extended Reach
Performance at 10G are broadly tunable (C- or L-band) and multi-rate (9.953
to 11.096 Gbps). With a built-in dispersion tolerance of +/-3200 ps/nm and
pin- or APD-based receiver configured with different decision threshold
options, ODB transponders enable system vendors to create the most robust
and reconfigurable network architectures.
"Historically Finisar has not had any transceiver offerings for transport
applications," said Rafik Ward, senior director of product marketing at
Finisar. "Today, Finisar is the only company to offer two complete systems
for 10 Gbps DWDM transport which are 100% interoperable with each other,
thus opening entire new market segments for Finisar."
The CML™ Compact 10 Gbps Optical Transmitter and 300-pin MSA 10 Gbps ODB
Transponder are available now in volume. For more information about
