Professor Achim Kaufhold, M.D. (49) joins Pharmexa as Executive Vice President, Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) and Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Dr Kaufhold has spent more than 12 years in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry in senior management positions. Prior to starting up his own life science industry consultancy in 2006, Dr Kaufhold held the position of Chief Medical Officer & Vice President of Development at Chiron, now part of the Novartis group, as well as being a member of the executive committee of Chiron Vaccines. Dr Kaufhold joined Chiron from Berna Biotech, now a Crucell company, where he was Chief Medical Officer, Head of Research, Product & Business Development and a member of the executive committee. Before joining Berna, Dr Kaufhold was Head of the unit responsible for the world-wide development of the pediatric vaccine portfolio at GlaxoSmithKline. Dr Achim Kaufhold has had an impressive academic career in the fields of pediatrics, basic and applied medical microbiology, laboratory medicine and infectious diseases, both in his native Germany and in the USA. Since 1993 he has been Professor of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and a member of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Aachen, Germany.
