Combines SMART's CoolFlex and DDP Technologies Using Lowest Cost Mainstream 1Gb DRAM Technology Operating up to 667MHz Data Rate for Leading-Edge 1U Blade Servers
FREMONT, CA--(Marketwire - September 27, 2007) - SMART Modular Technologies (WWH), Inc. (SMART)
(NASDAQ: SMOD), a leading independent manufacturer of memory modules,
embedded computing subsystems, and TFT-LCD display products, has launched
the industry's first 8GB Very Low Profile (VLP) DDR2 Registered DIMM
(RDIMM). SMART combines its in-house dual-die package (DDP) and CoolFlex
foldable printed circuit board (PCB) technologies to allow blade server
OEMs to double system memory capacity. SMART's 8GB VLP CoolFlex DDR2 RDIMM
is configured at 1024Mx72 with four ranks using mainstream 1Gb (256Mx4)
DRAM technology which operates at data rates up to 667MHz.
According to a recent iSuppli DRAM Module Tracker (H1 2007), unit demand
for 8GB server modules is expected to grow from a few thousand in 2007 to
11 million in 2011, which translates into an approximate market size of
$4.53 billion. "The recent drop in 1Gb component pricing is driving the
doubling of server module densities," explained Nam Hyung Kim, DRAM analyst
at iSuppli. "SMART is well-positioned with its 8GB VLP CoolFlex DDR2 RDIMM
to capture a share of this growth."
SMART's 8GB VLP CoolFlex DDR2 RDIMM allows blade server OEM designers to
populate their boards with up to four 8GB DIMMs per processor while using
vertical sockets. This flexibility also allows a 4-way 1U blade to be
configured with up to 128GB of memory capacity. By combining its DDP and
CoolFlex technologies with mainstream 1Gb DRAM technology, SMART offers a
practical and cost-effective high-density solution that surpasses more
expensive 2Gb-based 8GB DIMMs.
"We have extensive experience with providing leading-edge high-density
solutions to Tier 1 OEMs," stated Alan Gulachenski, SMART's Senior Director
of Advanced Memory Solutions. "The 8GB VLP CoolFlex DDR2 RDIMM is the
latest example that highlights our strengths in PCB and advanced DRAM
package design."
