SHENZHEN, CHINA--(Marketwire - September 28, 2007) - Cisco® (NASDAQ : CSCO ) China announced
today the creation of a pioneering paradigm for the country's metro
operators. In the first of its kind in China, Shenzhen Metro is deploying a
Cisco Unified Wireless solution to build a comprehensive wireless network
for its Passenger Information System (PIS) on the city's high-speed Line
One subway. The network will enhance business operations for the metro
operation and bring added value and convenience to passengers. Based on
Wi-Fi technology, the Cisco solution supports high-density digital TV
broadcasting and facilitates real-time monitoring of the metro's control
center.
The PIS system can transmit a high-definition digitally encoded signal in
real time from the central control room to moving trains. Passengers can
watch high-quality digital TV programs on the LCDs in each carriage and
receive news, weather reports or emergency evacuation alert messages.
Through the video display, subway drivers can understand the situation of
the station platforms as well as that inside the moving cabin, which helps
ensure the safety of the metro operations.
The first phase of Shenzhen Metro's Line One subway runs 17.55 kilometers
(11 miles) through the city from Luo Hu in the east to one of Shenzhen's
key attractions, "Window of the World," in the west. The company's upgraded
Passenger Information System not only improves communication between moving
metro trains and the control room, but also strengthens its leadership role
by providing an innovative experience for its metro passengers.
Cisco has provided the latest Unified Wireless solution for Shenzhen
Metro's PIS project. The core components include Cisco Aironet® 1310
Access Point, an outdoor industrial product with outstanding stability and
excellent control and security, and the enterprise-class Cisco Wireless
Services Module (WiSM). These will help Shenzhen Metro manage and expand
its wireless PIS as conveniently as a traditional wired network.
"Cisco is pleased to be working with Shenzhen Metro in pioneering this
wireless network and bringing added value to its passengers. This not only
demonstrates how networking technology enhances people's daily lives, but
will also have profound implications for widespread deployment of the
technology among metro operators," said Fredy Cheung, managing director,
South China and Hong Kong, Cisco.
About Shenzhen Metro's PIS Project
Line One of the Shenzhen Metro now enjoys a digital TV broadcasting system
based on a wireless network. Each passenger cabin is equipped with eight
LCD screens, and there are 48 such screens on each metro train. The control
center can stream IP-based MPEG-2 HD TV programs to every cabin. Each
train also has a video monitoring system consisting of IP-based digital
cameras that send MPEG-4 encoded images of the passenger situation inside
the cabins to the control center through the Wi-Fi network in real time.
