WHERE: Bussey Elementary School (Houston, TX) 11555 Airline Drive WHEN: Tuesday, October 2, 2007 @ 10 AM WHAT: Houston City Council Member Adrian Garcia and several Houston organizations have teamed up in an effort to decrease childhood pedestrian safety injuries and deaths. The coalition will announce its educational initiatives for International Walk to School Day, a day when grassroots safety initiatives in more than 500 schools nationwide will take place. WHY: Based on latest research, Houston ranked number 5 among 47 major metropolitan areas as one of the most dangerous for child pedestrians. Child pedestrian injury remains the number two cause of accidental death among children ages 5 to 14 in the U.S. nationally; -- with males accounting for nearly two-thirds of all childhood pedestrian deaths and, -- African-American children, males, living in high density areas and residing in low-income households are most at-risk for these types of injuries.
