Medical Publications Teams Select Target Outlets Based on Peer Review
| Source: Cutting Edge Information
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC--(Marketwire - October 17, 2007) - A new study released by Cutting
Edge Information, available at http://www.PharmaPublicationStrategy.com,
examines medical publication efforts of pharmaceutical companies across a
wide range of therapeutic areas. The study finds that publications teams
weigh peer review as one of the most important criteria when deciding which
journals to pursue.
When choosing a target publication, companies account for many criteria,
including rank, circulation data, and previous experience with a given
outlet. Given these many considerations, however, surveyed medical
publication experts ranked peer review as the most important factor in the
decision. On a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the most important, peer
review was ranked a nine.
The focus on peer review can be attributed, at least in part, to the
close-knit nature of the medical community. Although physician networks differ
across therapeutic areas, physicians' opinions are often highly valuable to
their peers. A journal whose publications receive constant criticism, for
instance, is not likely to be looked upon as a reliable source in
evaluating new treatments. With this fact in mind, publications teams
capitalize on the guidance of thought leaders and key opinion leaders when
evaluating publication outlets.
Senior Research Analyst Amanda Zuniga comments, "It is no surprise that
companies rank peer review as the most influential factor here.
Pharmaceutical companies want to publish in the journals that are most
respected by medical professionals -- reputation in the medical community
is extremely important."
