Stora Enso launches new Pharma DDS solution
Stora Enso's portfolio of pharmaceutical solutions is growing as the company launches its new Pharma DDS packaging solution. The Pharma DDS carton is designed to be very easy and discreet to use. The carton's dexterous locking mechanism and flexibility to a variety of packaging lines make the concept unique in the market. What's more, Stora Enso is introducing the world's most advanced intelligent packaging solution Pharma DDSi.
"Pharma DDS is suited to high-volume branded drugs or branded generic drugs, as well as drugs that require high compliance and child-resistance. The innovative package could help prolong the lifecycle of drugs in post-launch marketing efforts. Being convenient and discreet to handle, the carton is ideal for drugs in everyday use,"

The carton has several features that support the patient's compliance with his or her drug prescription. The smart inner design enables effective unit dose packaging such as fold-over blisters or perforated push-through applications. The carton is extremely light-weight and doesn't bulge in the pocket, yet it offers several printable surfaces for patient guidance. The construction is practical, safe and flexible in size. DDS stands for Discreet Dose Slider.
Can be produced on several cartoners
"Several packaging machine manufacturers have confirmed that they can run Pharma DDS on their cartoners at high speed, with minor tooling modifications. Our wide board selection offers several material options, depending on the printability and functionality required," Saarinen says. Pharma DDS differs from any existing solutions thanks to its unique locking mechanism, flexibility to variety of packaging lines and flexibility in manufacturing methods such as heat sealing or gluing.
If the application requires highly-rated child-resistant and senior-friendly packaging, the Pharma DDS inlay can be made from tear-resistant CKB Pharma TR board. "Based on very positive results in CR and SF testing, Pharma DDS addresses the requirements for a wide range of pharmaceutical packaging. The carton has reached the highest
F=1 testing result and is suited for the packaging of highly toxic drugs but also serves other categories. This is because of the flexible inlay designs and material options," says Saarinen.
Pharma DDSi - Ground-breaking solution for ultimate compliance
Stora Enso's new pharmaceutical solution offers a platform for including intelligent features in the package. Pharma DDSi is the first intelligent packaging solution in the world to use the newly developed microchip from Cypak. "Based on the use of a single microchip embedded in the carton, Pharma DDSi opens the way for high-volume global use of intelligent pharmaceutical cartons," Saarinen says.
