Gas Prices Move Downward

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - January 18, 2008) - After inching closer to near record high prices only a week ago, gasoline prices moved downward this week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.

The statewide average price dropped nearly four cents to $2.94 a gallon. A year ago, Texas motorists shelled out an average of $2.11 for a gallon of gas. The national average is $3.04 a gallon, down six cents in a week.

"In the next few weeks, pump prices appear unlikely to test new highs," said AAA Texas spokesperson Rose Rougeau. "Consumption is typically lowest at this time of year due to adverse driving conditions in northern parts of the U.S., and the absence of long holiday weekend travel opportunities."

El Paso has the lowest average on the list at $2.85 a gallon -- down a penny. Texarkana has the highest at $3.01 a gallon -- down almost four cents.
