Pump Prices Move Downward

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - February 1, 2008) - Gasoline prices in all areas surveyed declined for three consecutive weeks, except for Amarillo, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.

The Texas average fell almost three cents to $2.87 a gallon. Last year, the statewide average was 84 cents less at $2.03 a gallon. The national average is $2.99 a gallon, a weekly decrease of two cents.

"The slowing of the economy and fears of a recession appear to have curtailed motorists demand for gasoline," said AAA Texas spokesperson Rose Rougeau. "That has resulted in an increase in inventories of crude and a decrease in the price of crude from the highs of nearly a $100 a barrel to the current $90. If oil prices continue falling, retail gas prices are expected to retreat further."

El Paso has the lowest average once again at $2.82 a gallon, down a penny. The Austin - San Marcos area has the highest average on the list at $2.92 a gallon, down two pennies.
