The Horatio Alger Association Announces Its 2008 State of Our Nation's Youth Initiative

Association Commissions Research to Provide Insight Into Minds of Young Americans

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - February 21, 2008) - The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans has commenced its research campaign, "The State of Our Nation's Youth," focusing on American teens. The goal of the initiative is to ascertain the unique issues and sentiments of today's youth and give a voice and attention to their opinions, apprehensions and aspirations. Results and analysis of the survey will be announced on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, where a student panel will participate in a press conference and discussion of the results.

"A key mission of the Association is to invest in our nation's teens, and 'The State of Our Nation's Youth' illustrates the critical value of understanding America's future leaders," said Terrence J. Giroux, Executive Director of the Horatio Alger Association. "With this initiative, we continue to not only fine-tune our perception of America's teenagers as their issues evolve, but it also serves as a resource for the education community at large."

This year, the survey will focus on adolescents' views on a variety of current events including, but not limited to, environmental concerns, rising college tuition rates, social networking and political apathy during this presidential election year. The survey will also address personal topics such as bullying, body image, peer pressure and the drive to succeed. The poll will be conducted via telephone to 1,000 teens between 13-19 years old residing in the U.S.

The Association has commissioned Peter D. Hart Research Associates to execute "The State of Our Nation's Youth" research for the past ten years. It serves as a valuable tool for state departments of education around the country, as well as other educational sources, including the Association's field director network. The research was last conducted in 2005.
