Discera Named a Red Herring 100 Award Finalist
Award Recognizes the 100 Most Promising Private Companies Driving the Future of Technology
| Source: Discera
SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - April 23, 2008) - Discera, a world leader in CMOS MEMS
oscillators, resonators, and provider of next-generation timing solutions,
has been selected as a finalist for the Red Herring 100 2008 awards. The
Red Herring 100 is a selection of the 100 most innovative private
technology companies based in North America. Past winners include Google,
Yahoo!, Skype, and YouTube.
The Red Herring 100 list has been regarded by technology industry
executives, investors, and observers as an invaluable instrument to
discover and advocate the most promising startups that will lead the next
wave of disruption and innovation. Over 800 companies were evaluated but
only 200 were selected as finalists based on financial performance,
technology innovation, quality of management, execution of strategy, and
integration into their ecosystem.
"We are honored to be selected as one of the finalists for this year's Red
Herring 100 awards," said Tom Willey, CEO of Discera. "This award
nomination further validates the value that MEMS timing devices bring to
the market where quartz has hit a wall in terms of scalability and
flexibility. Discera's MOS1 is now in volume production and has delivered
higher performance, shorter delivery times and lower costs, providing
customers and design engineers the alternative to quartz crystal
immediately."
Quartz crystal has been the choice material for electronics designers for
more than 50 years; however, it can no longer scale in price and size.
Discera's CMOS MEMS-based resonators enable electronics companies to
overcome the challenges posed by quartz crystal technology and offer the
alternative that the electronics industry has been waiting for. Based on a
recent study by Wicht Technologie, MEMS-based oscillators are expected to
grow over 120 percent each year, penetrating today's $3.8 billion quartz
timing market.
"We can see the exciting evolution of the technology sector reflected in
the quality and variety of exceptional companies that we had to choose from
in putting our list together," said Joel Dreyfuss, editor-in-chief of Red
Herring. "It was tough to choose just 200 finalists from such a large list
of excellent contenders, and we are very happy with the quality of the
companies we selected as finalists."
The 100 winning companies will be unveiled at Red Herring North America
taking place May 12-14, 2008 in San Jose, California. For more information

About Discera
Discera is a fabless analog semiconductor company that offers tiny, high
performance silicon resonators for the frequency and timing control
markets. These resonators act as the heartbeat or pulse for a variety of
devices from consumer products such as cameras and MP3 players to
specialized equipment for the military. The company's PureSilicon™
resonator technology is a fundamental building block that offers, according
to Semico Research, "a better mousetrap" for creating fully integrated, low
cost, small form factor wireline and wireless products, such as
oscillators, filters, and RF components. Unlike crystal based oscillators,
Discera's PureSilicon™ based CMOS oscillators can be integrated into
other CMOS-based circuits. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in San Jose,
California, Discera is a privately held company with investments from
Ardesta, Partech, 3i, Qualcomm Ventures, Horizon Ventures, and Scale
Ventures. More information is available at www.discera.com.
