Johnson Controls Ingenious Products Spawn New Era in Home Comfort and Energy Efficiency

Homeowners' Needs Met With New, Smaller Air Conditioners, Heat Pumps and Gas Furnaces

NORMAN, OK--(Marketwire - July 11, 2008) - Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI) recently launched a new era in residential home comfort and energy efficiency with the introduction of two product lines -- the new 33-inch gas furnaces and the new LX Series of air conditioners and heat pumps. The new product lines reflect the Johnson Controls vision to create smart environments and contribute to a more comfortable, safe and sustainable world.

Both residential products are smaller, easier to install and among the most energy efficient and most sustainable products on the market, appealing to homeowners, installing contractors and HVAC distributors. Marketed under the York®, Coleman® and Luxaire® brands, the new units deliver on Johnson Controls' commitment to product and technological innovation.

Smaller, More Efficient Heating Products

Johnson Controls has achieved two industry firsts with the 33-inch gas furnaces. The furnaces include an ingenious, fully modulating gas valve that varies the gas input to closely match the amount of heat needed. This feature helps save natural gas and reduces homeowners' utility bills. In addition, the furnaces have unprecedented Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. Some furnace models achieve up to 98 percent AFUE -- the highest rating in the industry. Other models are at least 97 percent efficient.

Seven inches shorter than previous models, the 33-inch furnaces are the solution where space is limited, including closets, attics and other tight spaces. Other important benefits include:

-- All 97 percent AFUE models are ENERGY STAR® qualified, a unique designation provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

-- Quiet operation -- as low as 61 decibels (dB) on some models.

-- Integrated controls provide comfort to within one degree of the thermostat setpoint and ensure precise modulation of the gas valve.

Lightweight, Sustainable Cooling Products

The LX Series air conditioners combine MicroChannel coil technology in a smaller package to ensure energy efficiency, reduce utility costs and save space. The air conditioners are ideal for town homes, condominiums and zero lot line projects.

Easy to install and service and up to 30 percent lighter than competitive models, LX Series units use up to 50 percent less refrigerant, contributing to sustainability. They also deliver the following features and benefits:

-- 14.5 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) models exceed 2009 ENERGY STAR® requirements.

-- One of the smallest footprints in the industry -- only 23.5 x 23.5 inches on 13 SEER models.

-- Reduced sound levels.

-- Cooling capacities from 1.5 to 5 tons of refrigeration, meeting the needs of small and larger homes.

-- Aluminum coils for superior durability and corrosion resistance, ensuring that the units last a long time.

QUOTES:

Tom Huntington, vice president and general manager, Unitary Products Division, Johnson Controls:

-- "After extensive research, testing and product development, Johnson Controls is introducing two breakthrough products for home comfort. These revolutionary products are smaller, quieter, easier to install and more energy efficient than comparable products on the market. Plus, they contribute to a smart home environment."

Tom Roberts, president, cfm Distributors Inc.:

-- "The most difficult challenge for a distributor is change. We have faced an enormous amount of change as we have experienced the transition to 13 SEER, the R-410A transition that is occurring now, and these new products from Johnson Controls. But this change is worth it. It marks the emergence of a new way of thinking for Johnson Controls management and product development teams. These new products address everything -- sustainability, sound, size, shipping, installation, efficiency and value. This new product engine is hitting on all cylinders."

Tim Lashar, president, Lashar Home Comfort Systems:

-- "Both of these new product lines present dealers with a number of important benefits. Their compact size and variety of design improvements make the units easy to install and service. The new units also equip dealers with selling points that are attractive to homeowners -- things like improved energy efficiency, quiet operation, the use of environmentally friendly refrigerants and durable, stylish cabinets. They also support green, sustainable home design."
