According to an article in the August 12, 2008 edition of Northern Territory News, the Darwin Police deployed a TASER(r) Electronic Control Device on a 33-year-old man who was on a rampage at a residence armed with a 60cm cane knife. According to the article, police officers decided to use a TASER device after it was determined that hands-on contact or capsicum spray wouldn't be effective in ending the situation.
The article quotes Watch Commander Senior Sergeant Garry Smith saying, "A man with a sword -- in that state of mind he was a threat to himself, members of the public and police."
