3 Scandinavia Selects Cisco to Support Expansion of Broadband Data Services and to Reduce Network Management Costs
High-Performance Platform Will Help Mobile Operator to Maximize Opportunities in Rapidly Growing Mobile Internet Market

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN--(Marketwire - November 13, 2008) - Cisco (NASDAQ : CSCO ) today announced that
it is working with 3 Scandinavia to help deliver sophisticated mobile
broadband services and applications to 3 Scandinavia's mobile subscribers.
In response to an explosion in demand for data services from its
subscribers, 3 Scandinavia has chosen Cisco to upgrade its network helping
it deliver increased bandwidth, improve network availability and reduce
network complexity.
"Scaling our network to meet the tremendous growth in demand for data
services and enabling the mobile Internet are critical to our success. To
help us capture this opportunity, we need a reliable network that will help
us respond to market trends and deliver new applications and services to
customers quickly," said Jörgen Askeroth, chief technology officer, 3
Scandinavia. "Cisco's platform met all our needs, delivering unrivalled
performance with an architecture that helps us reduce network complexity
and will serve as a platform for future growth."
3 Scandinavia launched its third-generation (3G) mobile service in 2003 and
has so far attracted more than a million customers thanks to its superior
service offering, which provides mobile Internet connection speeds of up to
7.2 megabits per second, successfully competing with fixed xDSL solutions.
3 Scandinavia delivers high-quality media-rich content, including audio and
video to customers, allowing them to receive multimedia content and
information much faster than over traditional networks.
"Regardless of their locations, the devices they are using, or the types of
content they are accessing, mobile users want to have a consistent
experience when accessing services on the move," said Larry Lang, vice
president and general manager of Cisco's services and mobility business
unit. "Cisco's technology helps enable 3 Scandinavia to meet its future
needs for data throughput and capture a larger share of a growing market as
users demand mobile access to online services and applications that have
traditionally only been available by using a PC."
The Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network, which has been deployed in
conjunction with Atea, a Cisco Gold Certified Partner, includes a Cisco®
Enhanced Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) unit on Cisco 7600 Series Routers
with Cisco Service and Application Modules (SAMI) for Internet Protocol
(IP) blades. This will bring a robust, high-performance, data gateway
solution for one of the most advanced mobile markets in Europe.
"Meeting the demands of some of the most advanced mobile data users in the
world is a challenge," said Björn-Erik Karlsson, vice president, Atea
Sverige AB. "By combining our expertise with Cisco solutions and by working
with Cisco's Advanced Services team, we have simplified the management of
the network and deployed an architecture that will help it to expand
quickly to capture new market opportunities."
In addition, 3 Scandinavia is using Cisco 7600 Series Routers to provide 10
gigabits-per-second connectivity across its core network. The network also
includes a Cisco SCE 8000 Series Service Control Engine, which is being
deployed for classification, control and policy management of IP traffic.
Throughout the project, Cisco's Advanced Services team has been engaged to
build and deploy 3 Scandinavia's architecture.
