UK Nuclear Power Plant Operated by EnergySolutions Receives Extension to Continue Generating Power
SALT LAKE CITY, UT--(Marketwire - December 19, 2008) - EnergySolutions, Inc. (NYSE: ES). The
Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) announced this week that the
Oldbury Nuclear Power Station, located near Bristol, England will continue
to generate electricity beyond its closure date of December 2008, likely to
be around two years. The facility is operated by Magnox North, a company
owned by EnergySolutions.
"This is great news for power generation in the United Kingdom," said Steve
Creamer, CEO and Chairman of EnergySolutions. "We appreciate the Nuclear
Installations Inspectorate (NII) taking the time to evaluate this facility
and grant the license extension. Much of the credit for this extension
goes to the dedicated and committed employees who operate the Oldbury plant
in a safe and efficient manner and I congratulate them on their
achievements."
During this year the employees have been undertaking work to support the
period of extended generation, including evaluation of the Periodic Safety
Review, the key document used by the NII to check the safety of the site.
"This is a fantastic achievement for all involved and we now look forward
to continued safe generation at Oldbury," said Mark Morant, President of
EnergySolutions International Group.
The Environment Agency, who has also been involved in this program of work,
confirmed that no changes to the current authorization are necessary.
EnergySolutions employees will work to maintain environmental standards
that played a role in the decision to continue operation of the Oldbury
Facility.
EnergySolutions offers customers a full range of integrated services and
solutions, including nuclear operations, characterization, decommissioning,
