euNetworks Selects Infinera for Pan-European Network

Digital Flexibility for euNetworks' 15-City Network

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - February 24, 2009) - euNetworks has selected an Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) Digital Optical Network for its pan-European network to enjoy the benefits of the speed and flexibility of Infinera's digital architecture.

euNetworks chose Infinera because Infinera's architecture offered speed, flexibility, scalability, and reliability that could not be achieved with traditional DWDM platforms. euNetworks Chief Technology Officer Albrecht Kraas said the Infinera system's interchangeable tributary adapter modules (TAMs) enable euNetworks to meet customer demands quickly and easily for a range of services including wavelengths and Ethernet services. Based on large-scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs) integrating more than 60 optical devices into a pair of tiny chips, the Infinera DTN offers 100 Gigabits/second (Gb/s) of optical capacity on every line card. The scalability and reliability of the Infinera DTN will enable euNetworks to quickly accommodate growing customer demand throughout its network with its trademark low-latency, high-availability services.

Mr. Kraas said that Infinera's digital switching capability will enable euNetworks to carry out its upgrade plans and turn many of euNetworks' two-way network nodes into multi-directional nodes in the future simply and cost-effectively. "The flexibility of upgrading to two, three, or four-way nodes and the non-blocking switching of the Infinera system are far superior to DWDM solutions based on ROADMs where you need to make decisions in advance on an upgrade path and then you are locked into those decisions," commented Mr. Kraas.

A ROADM or reconfigurable add-drop multiplexer uses analog optical technology to switch light paths in the optical domain, requiring the measurement and evaluation of a large number of optical parameters across the entire network before initial network deployment, and putting constraints on network upgrades as customer demand and traffic patterns evolve over time. Infinera's digital architecture eliminates those constraints by converting the optical traffic to the electrical domain at every node, providing fully flexible switching from day one, with quick and simple augmentation and modification of the network as traffic and topologies evolve over time.

Six Weeks For a Pan-European Network

Xantaro Deutschland GmbH, an internationally focused service integrator, carried out planning and implementation of the optical network for euNetworks. Working closely together, Infinera and Xantaro deployed the initial phase of the pan-European network, reaching 14 cities, in just six weeks. Rapid deployment of the network was enabled by the expertise of the Infinera and Xantaro engineering teams, backed up by the design of the PIC-based Infinera system which eliminates more than 80 percent of intrabay fiber connections. Infinera's GMPLS-powered IQ™ network operating system automatically recognizes elements in the network and performs tests on connectivity between network nodes, enabling networks to be configured more easily and quickly than with traditional DWDM systems.
