WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - June 23, 2009) - King & Spalding, a leading international law
firm, announced today that Daryl Joseffer, the former No. 2 lawyer in the
Office of the Solicitor General of the U.S. Department of Justice, has
joined the firm's litigation practice as a partner in Washington, D.C. The
addition of Joseffer -- the most recent of four lateral partners with
Supreme Court and high-level appellate litigation experience to have joined
the firm in the past seven months, including the former Solicitor General
of the United States -- is the latest step in King & Spalding's strategic
expansion of its national appellate practice.
"Daryl is a highly regarded appellate advocate with substantial oral
argument experience before the U.S. Supreme Court, where he gained a
reputation for handling difficult intellectual property and other business
cases," said Paul D. Clement, head of King & Spalding's national appellate
practice. "His High Court and federal appeals background adds increased
dimension to our ability to assist clients in developing a comprehensive
approach to their litigation needs from trial through appeal."
Before joining King & Spalding, Joseffer was Principal Deputy Solicitor
General of the United States, after serving as Assistant to the Solicitor
General for four years. During his tenure in the Office of Solicitor
General, he argued 11 cases and filed more than 100 briefs in the U.S.
Supreme Court. He argued major patent, pharmaceutical, environmental and
energy cases, including Microsoft v. AT&T; Merck KGaA v. Integra
Lifesciences I, Ltd.; Warner-Lambert Co. v. Kent; Entergy Corp. v.
Riverkeeper, Inc. and BP America v. Burton. Joseffer also handled some of
the government's most sensitive cases in the courts of appeals. Prior to
joining the Office of the Solicitor General, he was Deputy General Counsel
of the Office of Management and Budget, where he focused on environmental
and other regulatory matters. Before that was a partner at Kirkland &
Ellis.
Joseffer said, "I thoroughly enjoyed the privilege of representing the
United States before the Supreme Court, but I am excited to return to
private practice. I'm looking forward to working with King & Spalding's
talented lawyers to continue to develop the firm's appellate practice,
which has expanded significantly since Paul Clement rejoined the firm last
November."
Joseffer began his legal career as a law clerk to Judge Jerry E. Smith of
the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He graduated magna cum
laude from Harvard Law School and earned a B.A. in Economics from Stanford
University.
King & Spalding's national appellate practice is among the fastest-growing
of any law firm in the nation.
Paul D. Clement, the 43rd Solicitor General of the United States, returned
to King & Spalding in November 2008 to oversee the expansion of this
practice. Clement has argued 49 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. In
March 2009, he brought on board partner Jeffrey S. Bucholtz, the former
Acting Assistant Attorney General and Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney
General for the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. A month
later, Ashley Parrish, an experienced appellate litigator, also joined the
Washington, D.C. office.
