SACRAMENTO, CA--(Marketwire - August 12, 2009) -

WHAT: First 5 California will conduct a media briefing following a
special commission meeting convened to consider a contribution
toward low-cost health care for children ages 0-5.

The Commission will consider contributing to the Healthy
Families Program, which provides low-cost medical insurance to
millions of children from low-income families that do not
qualify for Medi-Cal. Currently, the program's future is
uncertain due to the state's fiscal crisis.

Kris Perry, executive director of First 5 California, will
provide an update to participating media and answer questions
            regarding the State Commission's plans.

BACKGROUND: First 5 California, also known as the California Children and
Families Commission, was established after voters passed
            Proposition 10 in November 1998, adding a 50 cents-per-pack tax
on cigarettes to fund education, health, child care and other
programs for expectant parents and children through age 5. For
